Got very wet harvesting gooseberries today after the storm yesterday evening. So only took those on the outside and near to the path. Still got very wet. Managed half a bucket so some will be bottled and some into the freezer and some eaten fresh but will be cooked as rather sour.

@bertrand-mabel, lovely haul of gooseberries. Tried mine this week,  but still a bit sharp, or as my brother in law puts it " draws your a..e up to your elbow" 🤣.
Nice crop of peas too, I only grow sugar snap and mangetout now, but I remember how satisfying it is podding peas .

I’m growing strawberries for the first time this year and I’ve had a few handfuls so far, they’re Cambridge but they are throwing out lots of runners.  I’ve pegged a few down but are they throwing out runners at the expense of fruit?  Should I cut some off as I seem to have more runners than fruit 🤔

@CatDouch I wouldn't cut off the runners, rather peg them in small pots and grow them on. This being the first season there will be only a few fruits. Next year you will have more.

Brilliant, thanks @Eustace I didn’t realise they didn’t produce many fruits in the first season.  I’ll look forward to a bumper harvest next year 😄

    Lovely gooseberries @bertrand-mabel :)
I used to pick the strawbs a bit earlier too, because of slugs. Definitely not quite the same as ripening on the plant though.

I picked a couple of courgettes today. No photos, but there looks like I'll get plenty. No idea what I'll do with them, other than the courgetti thing for daughter. I have my doubts abut that too .... ;)

I'll probably roast them and freeze them for soup later in the year.
It's a place where beautiful isn't enough of a word....

I live in west central Scotland - not where that photo is...

@CatDouch usually a 3 year cycle for strawbs.  2nd and 3rd year tend to be the most productive for fruit and then you can follow @Eustace 's advice and grow on some runners from year 1 and 2 to give you mature plants to replace the oldest plants.

Thanks @philippasmith2 I think I understand strawberries a bit more now! For some reason I imagined a bountiful supply this year 😏

I forgot to put the dog gate over the greenhouse doors. Dotty dog got the first young cucumbers.
    First courgettes ready to harvest.
I have an added liability this year: a retired husband.
'Let's check the spuds', he said.
'Don't pull the plants up'' said I.
    Too late....

Topped and tailed the gooseberries and now those are bottled up. Still plenty more to harvest. (Sorry rather out of focus photo!).
