@Eustace your tree peony flowers are stunning! I have herbaceous peonies but no tree peonies. After seeing some tree peonies on this week’s GW episode they produce some of the best flowers I have seen. Feel like I’m missing out.
How do you rate tree peonies? I also don’t have any intersectional ones. This one in particular on the GW episode was incredible:
Feel like I should add either a tree or itoh peony if anyone could give advice on these?
Still nothing here on the iris and peony front though my garden is teasing me:
@Alfie_ if you are happy with having those gorgeous silky flowers for a fortnight early spring every year, they suit you. The drawback is that the flowers are easily spoilt by rain. The plants are pricey and I bought every one of them bareroot rather cheaply. The foliage is quite classy turning red in autumn. They take their own time to flower and lots of patience is needed. Maintenance is quite easy, just a simple pruning in autumn. I saw those peonies in full flower in a friend's garden a long while ago and that is what prompted me to go for them. I have herbaceous ones too, but they are still in bud stage. I don't have intersectional peonies, so can't compare. I think @Obelixx has a good one, 'Molly the witch', same as the one which @Dovefromabove also posted a picture of earlier in this thread.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
@Eustace thanks for the info. Yeh my herbaceous ones last a similar time and instantly flop if it rains. The Itoh peonies boast almost double the bloom time of the tree and herbaceous:
For an Itoh Peony I'm going to recommend 'Bartzella'.. not that I have it myself or know much about it, other than I see it in another garden locally and it's just fabulous, huge yellow blooms, flowers when young and seems easy to grow.. the person who has it knows nothing about gardening.. I've long coveted one but I'm always out of room..
I don’t have any of the Itoh ones, they seem more expensive and I am not sure about the dark eye. I have some herbaceous ones and an unnamed tree peony, which for me the colours offer something extra in spring early summer. It’s true the flowers don’t last long.
I’ve tried buying them different ways, at little plant shows, bare root and from farmers markets. Here’s the thing to think about if you have the money and really want to add them to your garden, get good established ones in this season and then they will be flower next year.
If not and this is maybe what makes them even more appealing, if you get small ones or bare root, they take a while to really get established. Or maybe that’s my lack of peony nurturing. Anyway then every year the anticipation is great; where are the peonies, maybe they’ve died, oh which one is that, oh it’s the same as last year a couple of leaves and one flower, wait look at this, is this the year, last year there were 3 flowers will there be more this year, the leaves are beautiful, maybe it doesn’t matter if it flowers, oh I should lift it an move it higher, ah that’s beautiful!
So if you want some excitement before the roses flower, they are worth a punt. And also like @Marlorena the big beautiful ones I see with loads of flowers and I ask what do you do, they reply nothing, maybe tidy them in the autumn.
@Littlegarden I do agree it's worth paying the extra for a decent sized plant, otherwise you can be waiting years. I also think it may be best to pick one out yourself rather than be sent one by mail order, unless there's no other option for the variety you want..
May has been a slow month for most of us I think, hopefully things pick up soon..
I'm still waiting for my iris to flower - hopefully not too long if we get some warm weather Can I pick the collective hive please with regard to peonies. I cleared a border last year and saved some small bits of tuber, which I potted up and are growing. I wasn't expecting them to flower but I thought I'd grow them on to see what I've got and hopefully get flowers next year. Can I ask please should I repot them now or wait until the autumn or even next year please. Any other advice always appreciated
@Littlegarden thanks for the advice. I think your first description is me; impatient
I have only just found out that Primrose Hall Peonies have a place in Toddington which is only about 20 minutes from me so hopefully I can chose one rather than mail order like, as you say, isn't the best way to recieve them.
@Eustace lovely photo. Looking at that plant alone would make me happy every day.
Yes the Itoh's are certainly appealing. The couple that showed them on that GW episode (and also won their 3rd gold medal) I found out are Terry and Mary Baker who own The Botanic Nursery so if I do go mail order I ight buy through them. On the episode Mary did single the Itoh out as more prolific and longer lasting flowers. She said they easily have 50 flowers on at once. I don't know about anyone else but my fully established herbaceous ones are nothing even close to that number.

I'm not sure I've seen such a dark Iris.. you have some good ones, peonies too, can't beat that foliage can we..
@Eustace
I thought I'd seen it before but worth another look, quite lovely isn't it..
.. cold again today, so still on hold where I am..

Does anyone have all three who could confirm if this is accurate? Thanks.
