I've potted up a new rose we've got but was wondering if I could put some ornamental gravel/grit on top of the soil? I've used John Innes No 2 with some mpc ( as advised on the Rose thread) but the soil/compost looks unslightly to me. Would grit be any good on top or would it impact on growth, aeration etc?
I don't think there is anything wrong with grit Hazel but it may be difficult at times to know if the pot has enough water. I personally wouldn't use it and if I wanted to top dress I think I would go for something like chopped bark.

That's a good idea LB, I'll leave the grit for that very reason. May try and get a little bag of bark. Thanks.
I've opened a new discussion this afternoon on the forum as OH and I have found two bugs on the Rowan tree which we've never seen before. Apparently they are bee fly....wow, fascinating. Surprising what you learn every day.
@Songbird-2 roses don't like being mulched with grit or bark. They like rotted manure and compost. I think the dark colour looks attractive under a rose. Why don't you like it?
I've finished raking moss and re-seeding the front lawn.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Just popped back in. @Busy-Lizzie, the compost ( JI No 2 with mpc) looks as if it's all compacted into a solid lump and looks unslightly to me. I'll perhaps leave off with putting anything on top then as I do really want this rose to survive or I'll be giving up trying to grow them altogether. However, I do like things to look nice. Probably too finicky, I suppose but that's just me.
Morning all. LB thank you for your advice. I’ve had a welcome cup of tea and a red berry breakfast and I’m washed and dressed. It’s forecast a cooler day today with clouds and intermittent sunshine. Hope you all slept. I did until 3am.
Good morning Rosie and all following on. I'm hoping for a good gardening day today. I have a tiny heuchera piece I found yesterday that I'm going to put into a pot keeping fingers crossed it survives. They always remind me of Joyce as she loved them and grew a few.
Time for me to get my breakfast and a cup of nectar of the Gods!

Night again.
