Well, what a glorious day it's turned out to be in East Anglia warm and sunny, like summer.. I fully expect an open bloom or two tomorrow.. 'Tottering by Gently' smothers this 6.5 foot obelisk, top to toe.. ..my shady border, yet full of roses... French Lavender 'Anouk'.. ..my Vilmorin Sorbus has a whole mass of flower buds all over it.. 2nd year, the first year it doesn't always flower after planting.. Clematis 'Avalanche'.. cheating as I got it in bud from Dobbie's.. Hope you have plenty of these right now.. I saw a Hoverfly as well, today..
That's it. I have just bitten the bullet and ordered a couple of trellises ( to arrive in a month's time, to give me a chance to cut down my buddleia and dig a new bed or two). One of them will definitely be adorned with Strawberry Hill at some point, thanks to your relentless propaganda, @Tack. You should write to DA and demand your rightful commission. 😉
Can anyone recommend a brand of galvanised wire which they have used and that hasn't rusted on them. I bought some last summer, but already is completely rusted over and needs to be changed before the climber it's supporting gets too big. Cheers.
@dabolem sorry to hear of your harsh times. Hopefully spring will bring some better times . @Nollie beautiful pictures! @Tack impressed with that Claire Austin. Better picture then the website of DA .
Came back from business travel this week and spotted today finally some buds on GdF. They are not the quickest starters in the garden. Urgently need some sun and warmth here because it is all going still slow.
Nicely planned and well maintained garden @Marlorena. @tack your SH is lovely. I don't have any rose blooms to show yet; it looks like a bud on Othello has proliferation. In the meantime another tree peony that I planted almost a decade ago is in full bloom - this time in my son's garden in Manchester.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
@Nollie The light buds look weird to me. Even if it pales a lot in sun, the buds should be orange/sunset-like. I looked through my photos and I do have some where she got very light. I don't have time to crop them, so hopefully you can still see enough.
This was my first bloom. You can see the colour of the buds. Also a detail of the foliage (relatively small, light green, smooth and glossy, red new foliage). The lightest I've seen her is in these end of season photos. Her 2nd year, June 2021. More buds in various stages and you can see what her blooms often do for me. Late July 2021, in a hotter weather June 2022 As you can see, individual blooms almost never look good, they accumulate damage easily and they are often ruffled in an unpleasant way. I do think it is a dry climate rose. It also flowers for me much less than I would like and I can see that she doesn't like cold springs. IMO it is a rose that looks good from a distance when in full bloom. Even with all these imperfections, I like her because she has a personality I like and it works for me when mixed with other plants.
