@Eustace How odd to see those flowering now..^.. your Susan Williams-Ellis bloom is just perfection.. when I had it I found the blooms somewhat muddled..
Looking at the moss roses they are beautiful. Do they tend to be thorny? Some say few thorns and I wondered if the temptation to touch them would result in a sore hand…
@Littlegarden On my Common Moss, the flower stalks and first year growth is soft. It hardens to very thorny after this. Which bits are safe to touch is pretty clearly divided!
And here is a close up on the canes.
I haven't really grown any other moss roses, so they might be different.
Don't grow up - grow sideways.
Gardening in the West Midlands on a mix of neutral loamy sand & Victorian building rubble.
Yes, most of the Moss roses are very thorny, that's a nice one above^ but if you want one with fewer thorns then 'Alfred de Dalmas' .. aka 'Mousseline'.. which also flowers throughout summer, on and off, might suit.. I think one of the nicest I've had was 'General Kleber'.. which has the kind of scent that's in the best possible taste.. and blooms to match..
L.D. Braithwaite was one of the first roses planted here, for OH. It was very floriferous for the first couple of years then went downhill rapidly, She rescued it from the bin for her office garden and in a cooler, forest location it’s finally picked up again. Huge blooms. Darcy Bussell in the same size tumbler for scale:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Just wondering @Marlorena if you have any experience with Dublin Bay. It's on sale at my local GC, bright red obviously, but I'm looking at it for a possible replacement for my Graham Thomas. The comments I've read, mainly from people growing it in the US admittedly, seem slightly contradictory in terms of growth, disease resistance etc. Cheers.

I planted the spring bulbs quite late this year; so I have daffodils, tulips and snow drops flowering now 😉
