@Rojas My husband shows an interest but only if they're strongly scented... his nose isn't too good..
@Eustace Better luck with yours I hope.. I gave it 3 years of my best soil and time..
My OH is interested only on taking photos/videos and sharing with family. However, I should add that he is the one who shovels the farmyard manure from the bulk bag onto buckets so that I can mulch the roses. Thankful for that 🙏
@Marlorena It is Papa Meilland from your worst list that I have - huge maroon red flowers which I cut for the vase indoors as they crisp all over in the not-so-hot sun.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
My top roses.. 1= I hope to show at the weekend 1= Kew Gardens 3 Marie Nabonnand 4 Mme Antoine Mari 5 Cornelia 6 Mutabilis 7 Ghislaine de Feligonde 8 Lady of Shalott 9 Scarborough Fair 10 Scented Garden I'd like to do another 50..
5 of the worst 1 Jubilee Papa Mailland - a thorny 3 foot stalk with a red bloom on top that balled in the wet - what's the point? 2 Conditorum - historic, interesting and beautiful, but a bloom barely lasts a day.. fine if you have half an acre.. 3 Agatha Incarnate - 1 bloom in 5 years.. 4 The Mill on the Floss - tall lanky stems with clusters on top, if not supported will flop over sideways... best on a wall... lucky if you have one of those.. 5 Viridiflora - sorry, just ugly to my eyes..
..biggest regret... losing ''Secret Garden Musk Climber''.. a rare and superlative musk rose that's now impossible to replace.. criminal negligence on my part..
Wonderful list. Thank you so much. They talk about the Monty effect... plants going out of stock after being featured on Gardener's World... and I think the Marlorena effect is very powerful on this thread. I so hope you, perhaps with the aid of your continental friends on here, can find your lost rose again somehow!
@Eustace Sorry, I thought you had Mill on the Floss.. .. I don't recognise that rose of yours.. mine was the 'Jubilee' one, it's quite different from 'Papa Meilland' which I grew years ago, a dark velvety red with a strong fragrance.. which had a weak neck - its main fault, and a weak grower in general...
Your 'Lady of Shalott' is terrific @Mr. Vine Eye, it's really brought out the colour..
Beautiful view of the garden @edhelka so very tidy and peaceful. And many thanks your posts on historic rose backgrounds.
@Marlorena thanks for sharing your list, happy to see Kew Gardens in it,I fell in love with it as soon as I saw it your pics. And now I must get Marie Nabonnard too, it’s wonderful (hoping it will get at leas half as amazing as yours!).
@Mr. Vine Eye your LoS is amazing, you really did a magic thing with it. Do you have it in full sun? How do you care for it? What’s your secret? 😊
My husband is not very interested in admiring the roses, but his nose is very happy to enjoy their scent when he is at home, so I need to buy many scented roses keeping him, and me, both happy, lol
Thanks! Yes she’s doing great this year, and flowering much earlier than my others.
This is how I trained her. She’s actually in an awkward corner between the shed and my espalier Apple. She gets shade in the morning from the wall, and then also from the shed for a big part of the year. But has to then cope with the strong afternoon sun in summer and the heat off the wall. So she’s obviously very adaptable.
I also spotted the other day that she has a couple of new basal shoots and several new red shoots slightly higher up where she’s currently a little bare at the knees. So that’s great too.
@pitter-patter I love your gorgeous garden! Everyones are looking stunning.
@WAMS Ah, shame about Eyes for you. Is it in a sunny spot? All my Hulthemias are in full sun and seem to love it. They close up at night, but during the day unfurl to bask in the sun. Bees love them, we have buff tailed bumbles nesting and ive been watching them roll about in the centres!
@Nollie, I got a flower on my William Shakespeare 2000 today and immediately brought it inside. It smells great!
Since I have been doing same rose variety vases this year and there was only one flower on WS, I added Madam Issac P and munstead wood to the vase. And yes WS is smelling better than MW today. MIP also has strong fragrance.
