I'm in Lincolnshire @WAMS 😁 and the temp can go up and down considerably! We had frost last week, and now full sun and 12°🤷♀️ If you like tulips how about this one? New to me this year, wish I knew the name, but it came in a mixed bag of small patio ones with the stripy leafed one, which I know as Red Robin. The hanging bells came out when they were only half the height, and are a dark mauve with yellow lip. I'm still not sure if I like them or not! 🤷♀️ The rose is Ruby Wedding.
I recognise those @purplerallim they are actually Uva-Vulpis Fritillaria, must have gotten mixed in the tulip bag! Very unusual!
No problem! Hours of pouring over bulb catalogues I recognised them as fritillary & double checked name. I bet the bees love them! I spotted a lone double daffodil of some sort has randomly popped up in the middle of my pure white daffs earlier (left), I bet the bulbs all look the same dried! I might have to relocate it once its finished
Haven't seen many bees here yet @JessicaS and they are quite small heads, a bumblebee would have trouble getting in! There have been few things flying around this year, unlike last when there were lots. I'm surprised they grew as snakeshead fritillary won't grow here, and I am finding it difficult to keep my Lily of the valley going too, both of which are more to the acid level soil I think.
@WAMS the sparrows spoiled a bit of tender new growth, as they were munching the aphids.. this was last year when the aphids were left unchecked.. This year I am squashing whenever I spot them and that's how I notice the buds..
on the topic of bulbs.. anyone feel Hyacinths are not hugely discussed compared to Tulips/ Daffodils..? possibly because they look same, just brightly coloured?
as expected, you are way ahead in flowering @SYinUSA
@Cambridgerose12 did you say yours flowered early this time and usually it's towards the end of April? I thought Canary bird was also among the early bloomers..
just checked few old pics and saw that my first bloom was spotted by 2nd week of May in 2022.. Surely Tack, Marlorena would have had theirs earlier last year..
Fun fact- Just realised that Wild rover is aka 'Harry Potter'
@purplerallim how funny, im the same area as you and we have loads of bees, they are going mad for the blossom! lots of peacock butterflies too weirdly!
@cooldoc very true. I love Hyacinth, I plant loads, but yes not quite as varied as tulips and daffs I guess? Ive got some beautiful scented doubles currently 'Spring beauty', scents filling the garden.
I now have Robins (chicks hatched over weekend), blue tits and blackbirds all nesting in my garden, 2/3 in bird boxes, blackbirds in a gap between the fence and trellis. Im delighted with that for a small urban garden!
I hope my wild Rover is half as nice @Marlorena. Its leafing away and seems much happier this year anyway with waltz time removed from its shade.
No, definitely not the only one @WAMS, I admire everyone’s spring colour every year, then singularly fail every autumn to order bulbs. Daffs, crocus and the like struggle here but I really need more species tulips. I was recently admiring @pitter-patter’s on the garden gallery thread.
What a lovely surprise to come back to @SYinUSA. Scepter'd Isle does look a delicate child, but often we don’t know what works until we try it. Some Austins are better in heat and humidity than others, which do well for you?
Yes I’m aware of and appreciate all that @cambridgerose, thanks, but rest assured, as I said, I’m not worried, life is far too short! I do find it fascinating observing and documenting plant behaviour tho.
I know what you mean about dahlias @Marlorena, I find single or dwarf dahlias easier to pair with roses but some of them are too big and clashy. Your photos of Wild Rover didn’t load for me for some reason, but I’m sure it looks fabulous..
Off to collect my car and pay a large bill - OH accidentally put petrol in my diesel car requiring a tow truck and a taxi home over the weekend 🙄
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Meet our resident robin 😀 I have seen him/her picking up worms, but not the slugs which are plentiful here. I have planted a few hyacinths in the pots mostly to deter Mr. 🦊 from digging in the pots to deposit their treasures. I apologise for the poor quality of the photos.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth

'Wild Rover'.. covers half the arch at around 8 feet.. there is another on opposite side, but I like to be able to see through the top..
..some of my potted Dahlias are sprouting.. pairing these with roses is a bit of a challenge for me..
..shocking day out there, couldn't do much..
