@Alchemist No not to the base, just where it goes over the top of the arch.. of course it's entirely up to you what you do there, this is just what I would do.. there is one each side isn't there? I would shorten some of the canes going over the top, perhaps a foot or so each side.. thinning it out a bit as it appears top heavy..
Just enjoy it for now and when most of the blooms have gone over, and you need to deadhead, sort it out then.. just a light prune or tidy up if you feel more comfortable with that and prune harder in winter.. I understand it's one of their most vigorous climbing roses..
Well I’m hardly an expert WAMS but thanks for the shout.
@Trish_Still_Learning if it is indeed the bush version of Arthur Bell - there is a climbing version too, but you would see it producing long canes if it were that - then it’s a floribunda and you can prune those quite hard, to about knee height. That keeps it a bushy shape and stops it getting too leggy. Roses are pretty relaxed about these things though, so if you prune too much or too little they carry on regardless.
You can prune anytime from late autumn to early spring, but usually best to wait until it’s gone dormant and lost most of it’s leaves. I do the annual prune sometime after Christmas. If I prune too early it puts all it’s energy into growing again and doesn’t get a proper winter rest. Not usually an issue in the UK, but with a warming climate, maybe something to consider in future.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@Vh72 If you just crop the picture slightly it will load right.👍🙂 Better still download a picture resizer and then you can get all your pictures below 1Mb and they will load faster.
Thanks @MarlorenaWill do as advised. If it’s good for you, then it’s more than good for me.. remember you mentioning 3-4 years ago that the arch looks small
Been out this morning 😭😭😭 two days of heat, 30°, and most of the open roses are fried. Nearly all Desdemona, the newly open Blue Moon, and even some of Celebration. Ruby Wedding has paled somewhat, but Blue for You and the Red standard have ignored the heat. Don't know if they will continue with a week of this though.
@Alchemist ..that long ago? goodness how time flies.. I do recall that now you've mentioned it.. That rose does have lovely blooms doesn't it..
Singing the praises of 'Bring Me Sunshine'.. for a 2nd year Austin, it's up there with the best I've had.. way better than 'Elizabeth' so far, but that may change..

My contribution to dark roses.
Looks like I have an outdated taste as I have lots of discontinued DA roses 😏.
