@WAMS yes it is enormous. I don't do anything different than my other roses. In fact I don't even liquid feed it - just mulch. I think a lot has to be with it being very established maybe. The main stem from the union is about as thick as my wrist.
@Songbird-2 yes don't panic, I would say most of mine are not out yet and are just in bud form like yours.
@Alfie_ Most floribunda roses will bloom with continuity throughout the summer, that's what they're all about... producing cluster after cluster.. like the ground cover shrub roses.. Austin's are mostly glorified floribundas.. others are more like the old Damask and Hybrid Perpetual classes.. perpetual here meant two flushes, early and late summer, with scattering in between.. Gertrude Jekyll is a Damask Perpetual, modernised..
3 of the best bloomers for continuity from Austins would be 'The Country Parson' which is early to start and last to finish.. never without a bloom on it.. 'The Poet's Wife' is another that blooms continuously without cease during summer... but the most prolific I've had here was one I didn't actually like.. 'Benjamin Britten'.. a huge, coarse thorny rose with odd colourings.. yet it produced flush after flush, 5 in a season if lucky with the weather.. as soon as one big flush is over, another is waiting to open.. 'Scepter'd Isle' was another, never without blooms and a delicious scent.. 'Thomas a Becket' was prolific and continuous.. I did not like the faded blooms too much.. 'Royal Jubilee' was a great performer too, non stop when I had it..and richly scented..
2 roses that are new to me.. 'Bring Me Sunshine' and 'Sophie's Perpetual' I have high hopes for and expect them to be amongst my best for continuity, and all other criteria..
If anyone in the E.U. is interested in the rose I was talking of earlier... ''Secret Garden Musk Climber''.. it's also sold by Bierkreek, Netherlands.. I knew they used to have it but thought it was no longer carried by them..
@cooldoc, for me Jude has one main flush and one repeat. A bit like GJ but at least GJs first flush is great. I wouldn't judge it by my experience though as most of my roses are not in full sun.
Can someone identify this rose? I’ve inherited it with the garden. It used to grow under the red robin tree and used to bloom above the tree’s canopy at around 8ft height. I dug it up last spring and moved it to a more open location. It didn’t do much last summer but it’s looking very good this year. Its growth is very upright and the foliage is pretty healthy (lots of my roses are affected by BS this year, even my usually healthiest ones).
The whole shrub
Photos of the same flower from yesterday and today. I’d describe the colour as coral red. The first two photos are showing colour closer to reality than the third one
Pictures of buds, foliage and stems
And just to add, the flowers are medium size and smell extremely sweet, like sweet bakery (makes me think of warm vanilla crowns).
