So many incredible roses. I only had my Alfred C climber and Princess A out but, as of today, two more; Gertrude and Summer SH! Some doubled my roses in bloom!
Princess Anne still small bloom sizes but pretty. Now 8cm and after emailing DA they said the lower end of that rose bloom size is 8cm so it's within where it should be. Prolific and healthy so can't complain too much:
Blackspot of SS is shocking but at least the flowers are pretty
Gertrude J looking stunning as always and the scent is just magical:
Twice in a Blue Moon not quite out but enough to enjoy the wonderful scent:
Still catching up with posts. Your photos brighten my day.
"Work" is not easing and couple of more days going to be very busy so not posting much. Haven't clicked many photos either. In the process of renewing mortgage to new rates and I appreciate importance of my job to own this garden so yes I tell myself working is part of gardening.
Good thing is next year I am going to have great display of bulbs as I have not yet cleared foliage.
Roses, weeds, grass and bugs everything is growing like crazy out there! Not sure what is different this year but there are way too many Ants.
@WAMS, two years ago I kept old disease prone Austins (Sharifa Asma, Abraham Darby, Evelyn etc) separately from rest of the roses, sprayed it two-three times in a year. They got rust, blackspot etc despite spraying. Last year I had no time to spray, and to be honest I didn't see much of a difference. Still got whatever problem each one had to get.
This year I had to plant out everything and I have mixed whatever I had in pots new and old, and wont bother spraying anymore.
In my limited experience, if rose is disease prone it will get some even if sprayed 2-3 times in year. May be more frequent spraying works but I havent tried that. I felt regular watering made more of a difference than spraying to reduce impact of diseases.
@WAMS I try to stick to monthly once spray schedule but I do get diseases at the top of this. I don't spray on the kordes roses though. This year all my roses suffering from rust including the healthy kordes roses. I am afraid of rust as it has killed my beloved and rare to acquire Tradescant 2 years back so I tend to follow a spraying program with Fungus clear and I spray after 20:30 in the evening.
Constance spry is waking up.
A Shropshire Lad - new potted rose this year
@Marlorena Your Cornelia is fabulous! The plant is fully covered in flowers and I just can't believe the numbers on them. Charming colour and I am trying hard to resist.
Please could someone advise where to keep the late bare roots? They are taking way too long to leaf out. The growth seems to be stunned due to hot days/cold windy nights combo. Should I keep them in the green house? Many Thanks.
@Rojas that Constance Spry looks incredible. I bought one as a bare root in winter for a fence. How long did it take to get to how you have it now? Fence is 2m wide which is what it states the spread is - did you find it to hold true to this spread? Thanks
It very cold here as well, unfortunately. The weather app says 15 degrees , but it feels more like 7. I’ve had high hopes for this half-term. All my tender plants are outside and I refuse to get them back inside! And I’ve planted out the tomatoes! 😞
Fab roses today.. oh gosh @pitter-patter the way you've framed that Indian statue is wonderful.. I'm just a bit puzzled by something on the right of your arch, at the top, but otherwise, terrific..
Such lovely roses all around from everyone.. so many to ponder over.. 'White Eden' looks interesting, not seen that one before.. 'Our Beth' is rather pretty isn't it.?
@peteS That rose isn't available in UK unfortunately, but yes it flowers all summer in flushes.. a marvellous rose..
'Princess Anne's blooms get much larger the longer you have it..
@Rojas ..thanks.. and your C Spry is going to look wonderful.. can't wait to see it..
@Marlorena 😆 You probably mean the mental chimney on top of the summerhouse/shed. It has a fireplace which I’ve used several times and it’s quite nice. It was here when I moved in.
@Alfie_ I have planted Constance Spry as a bare root in Dec 2019.. no flowers the following year. I am training horizontally, it grows really fast and covered two fence panels this year, I am sure it's over 2m wide and I don't think it stops there. 2021: 2022: 2023:
@Marlorena Thank you and will post the pictures when it's in full bloom. Would you keep a newly potted bare root rose in a green house until it grows?! TIA.
@Rojas Yes I would, that's perfectly ok, and I do it a lot... ...goodness your roses are massive !..
@pitter-patter aah..ok.. bit of an illusion, sorry my mistake there.. all looks lovely in any case..
@Athelas thanks so much.. I prefer 'Kathleen Harrop' both for the lighter colour and surprisingly, I find the scent a little better for some reason.. really very nice fragrance that I didn't always get so much on 'ZD'.. I've only had 'KH' a year and it's not as vigorous but I don't mind that at this stage..
