I think we get used to background noises and learn to ignore what's normal for us. Then when you go somewhere else, the background noises are different. I reckon that's the main reason why I don't sleep well in hotels - the sounds from the heating/plumbing, passing traffic etc are different from what they are at home - not necessarily more or louder, just different.

@b3 pleased to hear that you now have properly working hearing aids.  When I was referred to audiology at our local hospital about 10 years ago staff were extremely thorough, tweaking each hearing aid to get the sound as natural as possible.  Despite that I simply couldn't get on with them.  Although I do have some hearing loss my main problem is tinnitus and hearing aids actually made problems worse.

@KT53. I hope it's not the high pitched drive you crazy kind. I have the rushing noise and I tell myself it's a small waterfall outside the window if I notice it.
    In London. Keen but lazy.

Our new stairs are installed - four shallower ones rather than three steeper and all different heights at that. Handrails, newel post and patching up/painting to be done tomorrow. Nephew turned up unexpectedly this morning a day early, whilst we were still in our PJ's so the alarm clock will go on tomorrow!

It is the high pitched noise, but thankfully not so bad that it drives me crazy.  It makes parties and anything in noisy locations less than enjoyable because all speech seems to mix in with the noise and it's nigh on impossible to follow conversations.  Some days it's quite intrusive and on other days I barely notice it.
I was actually referred because the organisation I worked for wanted me to do a lot of phone work, and that really does make the tinnitus worse.  I was originally referred to the company's Occupational Health for a telephone interview (you couldn't make it up), and despite me having to ask for almost every question to be repeated OH claimed there was no reason not to use the phones.  I refused point blank without an audiology referral.  The audiologist actually said that using phones does make tinnitus worse which shot the OH idiot down.
  • My RTBC is I was just outside collecting some leaves and I uncovered a baby slowworm. ❤️  Chuffed.  I saw an adult one sunning itself on the gravel in the summer, but after that I had no more sightings.  Really pleased they seem to be still around and thriving.  Must be very careful when collecting leaves though.

My RTBC is that the large Norwegian Maple just outside the back garden has suddenly decided to change the colour of its autumn leaves after all, almost overnight. We were beginning to think it was going to happen this year for some reason. Looks gorgeous against a blue sky from my bedroom window.
