That is shocking news @Busy-Lizzie.  Will you stay in France for the time being now?
Sorry to hear your news @raisingirl - always more poignant when it happens at Christmas.
I'm still in 'do nothing' mode.  Woke up at 6.30am this morning, made myself a cup of tea and went back to bed and finished reading an Agatha Christie I'd downloaded to my Kindle.  Bliss!  OH has ventured out for provisions; the leftovers have seen us through until now.  We still have some sprouts left on the stick (and the lovely brussels tops) and I'm planning on doing something with them and miso for supper.  And perhaps making some kind of nut filling for the half butternut squash we still have.  Damn - should have put mushrooms on the list!

No, @didyw, the ferry is booked for the 3rd and we will stay with OH's daughter for a couple of nights then with friends. OH only has 3 weeks Brexit allowance and he doesn't want to use it up yet. He doesn't want to make a fuss as he says the hospital can't help it as they are short staffed and have a lot of flu and Covid patients. They have temporily stopped non urgent operations.

I'm sorry about your aunt @raisingirl.

It has been tipping with rain. I was hoping to finish weeding and mulching before we go.

We're back from a glorious outing to the coast ... the drive through the countryside was lovely in the sunshine ... avenues of gnarled oaks, some sheltered hedgerows with hazel catkins dancing in the breeze, and a buzzard perched above an overgrown bank, looking for lunch.

Then a walk through the streets to the fishmonger where we chose a brace of lobsters (one each for our NYE supper 😋) ... they were wrapped with lots of ice and put in the fridge for us to pick up on our way back to the car. From there we went down to the promenade and walked along the pier to the pavilion café and sat outside at a sheltered table drinking coffee and dog-watching.  It was a good morning for lovely dogs ... a pair of superb Akitas, a very excitable young labrador, several very staid older labradors, a Border Collie who wanted to round up a group of very elderly ladies, a pair of beagles, some dachunds of varying sizes and hairyness, a smart wire-haired fox terrier, a gorgeous brindle greyhound, a very handsome Irish terrier and the most gorgeous Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen 😍 to name just a few ...

After the coffee on the pier and a walk along the prom, we strode determinedly back up the slope and then ambled through the town, looking at all sorts of odds and ends in the shops.  Two curiosities stand out in my mind ... one of the mannequins in the 'sensible ladies' vest shop' had been 'interfered with' and was now exposing one of her bosoms to all and sundry on the high street 😱 .... then, at another shop at the end of Jetty Street there was a piece of blue rope stretched along the pavement and going down into a tiny hole (the size of a 10p piece) at the foot of the shop window.  I was puzzled as to what the rope could be doing there, and gave it a gentle tug but it was certainly firmly attached to something.  We surmised that it may have something to do with Bagpuss who, for many years, has sat in the big bay window on the first floor of a mysterious building halfway along Jetty Street.  I wonder if the rope will still be there next time we go ...

We collected our lobsters, and a pair of kippers, and returned home ... that outing did us the world of good ...  B)

Afternoon all. Hope everybody had a good Christmas, as we did.

Got back yesterday after a couple of days in rainy Bournemouth - didn't even get to see the sea this time! Lovely to see the grandchildren again though as the last time was in early July. We hadn't been able to travel due to OH's hip operation and subsequent recuperation. Also had a rest from social media which was good for me so haven't been posting. I've only had a quick scan back so if I've missed anything, apologies.

@Busy-Lizzie That's so disappointing for your OH, but not unexpected. Hopefully he'll get another appointment soon.

My sympathies @raisingirl, always hard at Christmas.

A beautiful pic @Dovefromabove, nothing like a seaside trip.

It's been raining hard here since yesterday evening so everything's looking very soggy. Think my NYD flower count is going to be pretty dismal this year, there's only white and pink heather in bloom and a scattering of winter jasmine. Hope it dries up soon, I've got a lot of rose and apple tree pruning to do.

Going to try a turkey curry tonight but I've frozen the rest.

    Good afternoon everyone,
its been a mixed day of sunshine and showers today with a stiff breeze. We took ourselves off to Fountains Abbey and Studely Royal gardens this morning for a bracing walk to blow the cobwebs away and give the car a run. Our plan was to call in Ripon for some lunch but the only parking space we found had a time limit of 1 hour, so we made our way home, had a sandwich and decided upon a fish n chip supper later instead.

Sorry to read of the loss of your aunty @raisingirl. Sad at any time of year, of course, but even more poignant at Christmas.

Lovely photo @Dovefromabove. It sounds as though you had a good trip out, too.

    Turkey curry sounds good @Lizzie27.
