I used Viandox in the past @tui34, the best subsitute I could find here. Oxo and Bovril can be ordered from The British Corner Shop, but it's expensive. @didyw Marmite doesn't contain meat so I can bring it back on the ferry and they sell it here in Leclerc but again it's expensive. But then wine here is cheap.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Thanks @Dovefromabove, I never like doing this test at the hospital, but this one is easier, both eyes together for a start. Trouble is there are only certain opticians approved for doing this test. The nearest is Stanmore and parking there is real PITA. You get 90 minutes in a nearby sains which should have been plenty, but with all the faffing about it was close. My OH did some shopping while I was in the opticians, but being an unfamiliar store she couldn't find half the things she wanted. I know we have to be safe to drive, the hospital say I am ok, I don't know why the DVLA can't accept their results, I get tested twice a year at the hospital.
Hello folks, -6.9 this morning at 8.30 am and DIL tells me her car was recording -8.5 as she was driving to work earlier. Not sure I ever remember it being this cold here before.
I dropped my mobile phone on the way back home today, had it in my new phone bag which is the cross body type but somehow the phone fell out whilst I wasn't looking, probably while I was looking up at the birds in the apple trees. Fortunately for me, some kind person found it within ten minutes and left it propped up by the signpost - phew! I've now glued a bit of Velcro to the top of the bag and hopefully that will work. I'll post a thank you notice on the signpost tomorrow. Think the birds might have been fieldfares, there was quite a flock of them.
I'm intrigued about the 'field test' for eyesight @Allotment Boy, I haven't heard of that one before, what does it entail? Hope yours goes ok on Monday. I did hear that the DVLA have a tie in with Specsavers, anybody know if that's true?
It's a trade off isn't it @Busy-Lizzie, I think your wine is still cheaper than ours so what you save on wine you can spend it on Marmite! (Ugh!). OH's brother still does a Calais raid just before Xmas each year to stock up on wine and reckons there's still a saving to be had. Takes the car across on the ferry - rather him than me.
Hi @Busy-Lizzie I get Marmite from Amazon now - reasonable, but not cheap. 2 x 600g pottles : 38€ free postage. I haven't a sweet tooth as such, so breakfast is toast and Marmite.
Yes @Lizzie27 Wine is very reasonable here. At the Co-operative it can be (about) £5 for a bottle of Merlot or Cabernet Sauvignon more for a Reserve Special and if I take my 5 litre plastic jerry can - 6€50 for a table wine of say 12° Volume. Just over 1€ per litre. Way to go!!! Languedoc-Roussilon have excellent wines - red or white.
We’ve been watching an episode of the absolutely marvellous The Singing Detective currently being reprised on BBC 4.
There has been nothing on tv to compare with it in the 35+ years since it was first shown. The writing and production are sheer genius. If you’ve not been watching I expect you can get it on iPlayer … genius, absolute genius. 🙏
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Good morning all. Bitter cold but apparently next tuesday we are going to have 11 degrees 🙄 Another medical today (boring but necessary) this one is my last drip for osteoporosis.
@Pat E I have googled the Echidna, a kind of Australian porcupine 😍. Sorry you have to chop wood in this season. Why is it that I always imagine Australians on beautiful sunny beaches? Stereotypes eh?
Be careful and good luck with medicals if you have any.
Hi Coccinella. Yes it’s funny how people imagine we all live on the coast. When you see how massive the continent is, you start to re-think it. We usually see a few echidnas each summer. They help to keep the ant population down. 😁

and, on the way out there, we spotted an echidna pretending to be invisible.
