I like this time of year when grasses also start to change colour. The leaves and stems of this Miscanthus malepartus are taking on buttery yellow and coral red tones while the flowers start to go quite feathery. (The M. zebrinus in the background is just coming into flower, the stripes on the leaves have been much less striking this year.)

Miscanthus are a 'must have' plant for me though this year the Molinia (in the background) are equal in drama.
Good to hear from another grass fan! Is that Molinia skyracer @Kate 7 ? I have found all Miscanthus in my garden excellent survivors of heat and no rain this year.

I bought the Molinia as Karl Forster but it seems much more 'solid' than its description. The Miscanthus is Cosmopolitan, it has loved this summer. Wish I had room for more.
Molinias have a thick green tuft at the base and very airy flowers. I grow M The Rocket it wlll turn a lovely golden colour in the next few weeks. I also have M Transparent that flowers better but the autumn colour is more a mix of green and gold. Molinias are not for the winter months here strong winds flatten them. They also needs more water than grasses like Calamagrostis.
I have worked as a Gardener for 24 years. My latest garden is a new build garden on heavy clay.
Suckers all over, but very beautiful and majestic.

Birches changing. Has damage from the brutal summer. On the whole the street trees have done pretty well and neighbours kept the new planting watered. You can see the blackened section. I think the tree will be fine.
The colours up here in the Highlands aren't quite as vibrant as they can be yet but I enjoyed our walk when we arrived late afternoon after it had stopped raining. Even the bracken looked lovely and the sunset reflecting in a puddle had its own charm.
