Oh, you have Louise Clements @Eustace. I've looked at that one a few times. How do you like it?
All of your roses still look so summery, mine are fading into winter mode distinctly.
I managed to get my last two potted roses into the ground today, Newsflash, a hearty looking strong orange with some nice scent (blooms not opening fully due to autumnal gloom) which I bought from Jones and also Global Beauty which I potted up from bare root last winter but now found a suitable mid border space for in the garden. It has a bare, uneven-stick manner of growth but lovely scented flowers so I only want the top third on show .
I'm in a mood to buy more asters to pad out some gaps between roses, very useful at this time of year when they are defoliating, so have been putting together a wishlist. I think my current batch do a jolly good job of distracting the eye from all the decaying things I leave over winter for the insects to shelter in.
Tried to get them all in one shot From rear, Connie, Monch and half of Vasterival, the best it has ever looked since I moved it next to a rose. Presumably the result of grey water mixed with tomorite.
I have plans to pad out the front of this side of the bed with some autumn plants, I let it get over run with clover from the lawn. Have already put the daffs in along the grass edge to prolong the season Desdemona the glowing white and on the far right red Trumpeter. Portland is the one stood next to the photographer.
Leah Tutu, looking quite healthy
I think this is a third flush from both Rosengarten Zweibrucken and the blue centaurea (a gift from the forum plant swap thread we used to have). RZ hasn't grown much since the first flush, maybe the heat or my deadheading.
AP must have a stunning fragrance if it beats RdeR @Discandied, how is the overall health and habit?
Your garden is a delight @pitter-patter, Harlow Carr is my favourite too, it works perfectly as a standard.
Love all your asters @Victoria Sponge, especially Vasterival, looks a good, non too floppy one for it’s height. I keep meaning to get some asters but somehow never get around to it. A bit like bulbs, which are sorely lacking in my garden.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Being new to it, I would appreciate the thoughts of those who grow roses so beautifully in pots and containers. I have Kew Gardens in a fairly generous pot (550mm dia x 600mm high so about 140lt ish) It's done well in it's first year and appears happy to be there. When planted in 50/50 garden soil & home compost mix, the pot was filled to about 50mm below the rim, and above the graft, however, as soils are bound to do, over the course of the year it has consolidated and shrunk to the point that the pot is now only about half full. Can I simply add more soil to raise the level again, or will this result in the soil level being too great above the graft and cause problems?
I love your gardens VS and PP, the Harlow carr standard is stunning. Shame I am still too grumpy with DA to spend that amount with them.
I am enjoying the Smudge pupdates and now we have Monty's Ned to admire too! It is good to be reminded how much effort they require...
A lovely day here today but a cold start, some cars on the road had frost on the roofs. Nothing other than lack of rain affecting the roses though, still having to water newish things in the ground as well as the pots. oh and watering a huge, very dry hole that my husband has dug ready for our compulsory replacement tree, it has to be 10-12cm girth and 2.75m height minimum as stipulated by the Council as a condition of permission to fell a tree with a Tree Preservation Order on it. Owning trees is an expensive business, the felling was eyewatering because of terrible access and the chipper being so far away up a steep hill.
Some pretty , highly fragrant blooms today
Chandos BeautyTimeless Purple, lots of buds still to come on this. It's really grown on me this one, the colour is more purple than this photo.Wollerton Old Hall, this does blackspot but is very vigorous and floriferous in spite of a poor shady location.Blue River, one of my best scentsThat's probably the last you'll see of my Lady of Shalott, it's being rehomed this week. Bad timing because it will mean cutting off a lot of new buds.

@Victoria Sponge I love your cottage garden look. Incredible how much colour you have.
