@newbie77 - when I take those photos trying to show the whole of Malvern Hills I have to step into the flower bed and press myself hard into the corner of the shed and fence to get it in frame! 😂
So a wider lens will be helpful and this is a particularly well recommended lens too.
It's quite close focussing which means I can use it for closeup shots of plants whilst also getting more of the background in shot too.
Your garden looks great from all the photos I've seen.
@Tack - thanks, that's very kind. You always take lovely photos of your roses.
Lens roses look splendid.. I'm glad you got them at last, very nice indeed actually..
Talking of roses in pots, I stumbled across this youtube video, some may have seen it already, where an American lady does a 1 hour tour of David Austins garden, taken earlier this year.. If you have a casual hour to spare it's worth looking at, but the potted rose section takes place in the first 5 minutes where she shows us all their potted roses, and how they plant either 2 or 3 in a pot, and she enquired and found that some had been in those pots for 10 years..
Lots of Old Roses too on show, I especially liked their Nuits de Young and du Maitre d'Ecole amongst others.. Thomas a Becket was a standout but in a large group.. and for once Mill on the Floss actually looked rather good on a wall. Outstanding Dame Judi Dench likewise..
Interesting point, roses can look very different grown on other rootstocks, which is why we can do all sorts of things here that might be impractical in countries like the U.S. where alternative stocks are used, as they are much too vigorous..
Thanks, yes I’m pleased with the Lens roses. I have another order - the german one of old DAs - lost in the system at the moment with another courier who claim they have the wrong address (nope) but the weblink sends you in circles with no way of contacting them. I really, really hate couriers!
Brilliant link, thanks for that Marlorena, doubly appreciate it, since I doubt I will ever get there. Interesting to see the roses they have endless repeat planting of, the newer ones of course but a good number of older ones too. Also some they’ve discontinued like Graham Thomas, LEH and Darcy still there but not a contentious Munstead Wood in sight! Good to see the old roses and ramblers too - I thought Violette looked fabulous, better than Veilchenblau. Wow, 3 in a pot for 10 years, they must still tip them out and root prune/refresh the planting medium every so often I would think? And finally, it was rather cheering in a way to see some diseased foliage and all in need of a jolly good deadhead 😆
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
First little Dusting of snow here, just as well im still planting the last few bulbs in pots!! I brought bare root rosa Sophie Rochas on a whim as lovely serrated petals and on sale. Never heard of it before, anyone have it? Catalogue pic;
..pretty rose, the fimbriated look.. no snow here, just missed us and we had a bit of a thaw today..
@Nollie I spoke to their head gardener on IG some time ago and he said they just scraped away a couple of inches from the top each year and replaced.. extraordinary really, but they do use big pots.. and staff to keep watering and feeding them..
@Nollie your love song looks great. I do really like the lilac colour. I'm also a fan of darker purple which is why I really wanted Munsted Wood as I currently have no purple roses. That Henry Street link you sent me have one called Twiligth Zone which says it is very fragrant. Would that have a better growth habit in a pot? Anyone have this rose? If so your reviews of it would be appreciated. Thanks.
Marlorena highly recommends Forever Royal and has a few other good purple roses Blue for You for a paler one Ebb Tide takes a while to establish but would be suitable for a pot Minerva - I think this one has some disease issues
I would grab Twilight Zone while you can, it’s sold out on me two years on the trot!
Purple roses are rarely purple for me because they go pink in heat, Love Song is my best lavender. Ebb Tide is probably the closest I get to purple in cooler weather:
Two others with purple tones that do well for me - available from tuincentrumlottum like pretty much all others mentioned but some sell out fast - are Stormy Weather aka Princess Sibilla de Luxembourg and Palais Biron aka Purple Lodge.
Stormy Weather can be quite purple sometimes, fades to a smoky lavender (climber, not for a pot, but stiff canes needing little support):
Palais Biron, fantastic fragrance, one of my best, would be ok in a pot, cool pink/purple:

Your bareroots look just wonderful, Nollie.
Wisley Cream clematis is about the only flower visible out there just now.
Everything else has been smothered, apart from LoS, which somehow looks quite shocked!
