@Alfie_ yeah, getting roses growing 'flatter' against the wall is all about training to a support structure and, in absence of which, your MAC is free to grow outward resulting in the more shrub like habit that you observe. The render is probably cement/sand. Do you know when the house was rendered?. Before you drill check that the render is fully bonded and adhering to the wall. Knock on it (as you would on a door) in several places. It should sound solid. If it sounds hollow then the render has detached from the wall and I would avoid drilling in those spots. Good luck with it.
I’ve dodged it too, up till now @purplerallim, even though OH brought it back twice from her work trips to that cesspit of disease known as London 😃 Just feels like a heavy cold at present.
Well my bare root order is on it’s way from Lens. First time I have ordered from them so I’m looking forward to seeing them in a week or so, especially the two standards.

..sorry to hear that @Nollie that's a bummer, hope it clears quickly..
I've been in and out of hospital and GP's surgeries a lot lately and more to come, and I'm amazed that so many nurses and consultants don't wear masks..
Even without covid you would think it were sensible for medical staff to wear masks. Everyone has to here in any medical setting - hospitals, GP surgeries, dentists, even the chemist. All you can do is wear one yourself @Marlorena, which may offer you some protection. Good luck with your ongoing treatment.

Must disagree about Rambling Rosie, @pitter-patter. It's lush.
Got the most amazing order from C and K Jones. Three discontinued potted David Austins that I was desperate for...
And six bareroot beauties with huuuge roots (It's A Wonderful Life, Great Expectations, Love Song, Twilight Zone, Sarah /Jardins de Bagatelle and Sweet Jessica).
Esp check out the thorns and the free mollusc on Sarah. 😁
I am over the moon with this order.
And my DAs from DA arrived last night- also very nice- Charles Rennie Macintosh and the Ingenious Mr Fairchild. My dog is going to have to get digging!
..they all look good, I've also had experience with C and K Jones and you could put them up there with the best for their roses.. .. I think they're in the north west yet strangely, they seem to lease growing fields literally around the corner from me in East Anglia, as the roses have C and K Jones labels on them..
@Nollie ..thanks .. I always wear them, but I can understand why so many people have avoided getting treatment the last 2 years..
Fabulous haul WAMS, very worthy tree decorations. What were were the three Austins?
I received an acknowledgment from the Schmid-Gartenpflanzen for my order of The Dark Lady, The Prince and Crown Princess Margareta, still no instructions on how to pay so I’ve emailed them back and asked in case I missed something somewhere. Don’t want to lose those! Oh and have just discovered Falstaff mysteriously back in stock so I’m trying to get my mitts on that again. I really am going to be drowning in roses!

Personally, I wouldn't drill into a rendered wall at all because I believe there is a risk of damp getting in.
You are correct that 'damp getting in' can be a risk @lizzie27, but one that can be managed so long as certain precautions are observed. I would not avoid drilling a rendered wall as a generalisation. What must be avoided is water ingress that is then trapped behind the render which then holds in between it and the brickwork and creates damp. If the render is fully and properly bonded to the wall then the risk is small. That can be minimised or eliminated completely by sealing any drilled holes with a mastic after plugging then screw through the mastic into the plug.

You might just have to live with the rose and chop off the forward leaning branches!
