I had Thomas Edison. It is beautiful. Couple of years ago I used to have lots of dahlias. Now I might have 3-4 dahlias. My little one says snails are so cute. She would be horrified if I put any blue pills so I am not growing dahlias for now. Will think about it in couple of years.
@newbie77 your kid sounds adorable. I can't use slugkiller anymore either because of the dog as well as fox/hedgehog sightings, but last year managed to grow both the Thomas E and Night Butterfly by starting them in small pots on the windowsill before moving them to the garden when bigger. The snails don't seem to bother them past a certain size. Could that work for you? Night Butterfly stays quite small - barely over 1ft high- so I hope to dot them about at the front of borders this year.
It's wonderful to think the first rose blooms are only three months away now.
I was thinking about dahlias just yesterday, when I got notification that my order was about to be dispatched. As we do not have very many dahlias (mine seem to have survived - but then we are lucky enough to have our boiler in the shed and this keeps the frost out) I have been a bit more traditional in my choices. Firstly a David Howard - as I do not have one and want it to companion my Canna Wyoming. Then a lovely little 'Happy Halloween' (Pic 1.) as orange makes me smile and I liked it more than the usual 'Totally Tangerine'.
Then I was seduced by the semi cactus 'Jaxon' - just a lovely magenta/red - remember I'm red|green colourblind. (Pic 2.)
All my other dahlias are either un-named Cacti or small border ones - but I'll find them a home.
Pic from Sarah Raven. Not bad on price for £4.50 each.
I planted the replacement bring me sunshine today, hopefully I’ll see some flowers on this one 😆
Then I defoliated city of york and added some compost around it, I’ll sort it properly when I get around to digging over the areas around it. I’m pleased with how many shoots it has!!
I was wondering what, if anything, I should do about these shorter bits? I’ve trained two long shoots along the wire but the rest were too little
I'm tempted (extremely) by the beautiful 🌹 bareroots you have been ordering, the voucher codes and the dahlias 🌼 However, I need to contain my enthusiasm and keep my cards locked away, as I won't be able to do them full justice this year as I have to travel abroad on at least 2 trips to attend functions. Looking forward to all the lovely rose photos in another 2-3 months time 👩🌾
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
@zugenie Looks ok. With those little short bits, I would prune back to where the stem is thicker and there is a shoot coming out at that point.. thin bits at the end are not a lot of use really, always take back to a thicker part of the stem..

Any time in March for me. I like to time it before heavy rain is due.. If I was in the coldest parts, up to mid April..
@Eustace
Good luck with your trips abroad.. Sounds exciting..
