A nice surprise when we returned home yesterday, new shoots on my bare root Strawberry Hill planted a month ago, a beautiful small bloom on my unnamed Apricot rose and behind that, apricot hips on Penelope. Sorry, in reverse order again!
@Marlorena yes I was impressed with my CM bare roots. The average one was similar to my best Austin ones. It’s just a case of getting them in the ground; it’s dark when I get up and also when I get home from work 🙈
Thanks for the advice about MAC.
So many great rose hips pics on here.
@pitter-patter what a stunning summer garden. How many seasons did it take to get Harlow C standards looking that glamorous? I’ve never gone for a standard but your pics definitely make it tempting for sure. Your standards look better than the ones on the Austin website.
@Nollie that pot with Gerty in is impressive! I love the belt it has to keep it together
Thank you. I was looking at the photos because some of the roses require moving. Tempted as I am by other roses, I need to make sure I take care of the ones I have, something that I’m often not very good at. Unfortunately, I can’t seem to get myself to dig out underperforming roses like Pure Poetry, Silver Jubilee, PhenoGeno Peach (I do wonder what you think of this rose @Jessica). It doesn’t help that, when they do perform, they look/smell so nice!
Pure Poetry
Silver Jubilee
I’m starting to think this Rambling Rosie was a mistake as well. I’m not convinced it’s suitable for pots and it will probably end up looking a bit blob-ish.
I think Harlow Carr must be in its 4th year now, @Alfie_.
...but it's one of those roses that flowers better the less is done to it. So if you want maximum flowering next summer, you wouldn't want to do too much...
@Alfie_ what is MAC, Madame Alfred Carriere? If so, then @Marlorena, your opinion on this, gained no doubt by your personal experience of it, appears contrary to Beales (i think) who state it requires hard pruning & deadheading to promote flowering. High maintenance in an awkward to access location is the main reason I chose not to grow this over my pergola.
@owd potter yes it is Alfred and it’s difficult to prune for sure as it’s nearly reach the roof 😂
We haven’t lived here long. We inherited it and it must be very old as the main stem (which is obscured by shrubs) is very thick, maybe 2-2.5 inches. Does look great when it’s flowering and is nice to see out of the top windows as you can open them to get the fragrance but it’s got to a point of blocking the light on that right one .
I have a ladder so need to go up there I think. It’s very bushy in its growth so protrudes a lot from the wall. It’s like having a bushy shrub stuck to the wall! I prefer the bit on the brick side which is quite flat in its growth. I’m not sure if that’s a feature of MAC to be so bushy? I would prefer something more like this one I found online in terms of it being more flat:
But like Marlorena said that would require training on the render and that’s probably not great to go drilling in to.
Lovely summery shots @pitter-patter, I always enjoy seeing your standards and I love your tumbling Medeo too. I’m hoping to achieve a similar effect with ground cover rose Avalanche Abricot in a tall pot, but it hasn’t put out any new basals in it’s first year so it’s a bit sparse at present.
@Alfie_ I shall be releasing the restraint on Gertie soon, at which point the whole pot will hopefully fall apart and save me a job but I may have to help with a hammer. I have promised Tack photos, watch this space!
I’d hoped to get so much done this week, but have just tested positive for covid and am feeling crap. I’m amazed not even the ward staff at the hospital - I bet that’s where I got it - wore masks around vulnerable elderly patients. Ma was doing really well, so I fervently hope I haven’t given it to her!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Hopefully you won't have @Nollie , and I hope you are feeling better soon. I got it in summer after keeping it at bay for two years! Wouldn't mind but I had been outside all day ,at an agricultural show, but still picked it up from somewhere 🤷♀️ I too love seeing everyone's summer roses, especially as its been dark and gloomy here for a week.

and that potted 'Medeo' is so graceful..
@Mr. Vine Eye
I know, maybe wait for discounts? see how it goes..
@Alfie_
I meant to say earlier your roses from CM look really good, so many canes on them, I would be very pleased with those too..
Thanks for the advice about MAC.
