Am I being pedantic, but I am sure Vanessa Bell was not married to Arthur? Although he owned a whisky company he had a deep Christian faith, so I am not sure he would have approved of her lifestyle!
They are married in my garden. And every time the Bells move in the wind, the dogrose over the fence starts to salivate.
Please do start another thread, @Marlorena... you're the hostess with the mostest!😁
@cooldoc oh that earth angels stunning, id not seen that before! Looks lovely! Its more modern too so might be more disease resistant etc? Peter Beales stock it by the looks, bare root out of stock but potted in hmm...
'Earth Angel' always looks nice, but I'm not sure if it balls in wet.. not that we're getting much these days..
I think VS might be starting a new thread soon, but if she's busy then I'll certainly take up the mantle again and give Nollie a rest.. I think you are the mostest these days @WAMS considering the number of roses you've acquired.. I only have a mere 35 now, junior league .. lol..
As per Mr Vine's.. Here are some pics of my roses.. the one I shall follow most is the first, which is not my most advanced though, just one I'm interested in... other pics follow.. This HT, which is totally gorgeous in bloom, I cut down to 2 inches in Jan.. It's now shooting out nicely with little basals appearing under the mulch.. so pleased about that.. 'Mutabilis' probably my most advanced.. ..with 'Marie Nabonnand' which is always my first to bloom.. ..a young 'Lavender Lassie' doing well.. ..this fabulous purple rose 'Forever Royal' shoots out from all over after a decent prune.. 'Elizabeth'.. love this foliage colour and vigour, fast becoming a favourite.. 'Lucky'.. I was worried about this as it got moved, but recovering well.. another one I'm increasingly fond of.. gorgeous lilac pink rose..
..looking forward to state of play with everybody else..
Lady of the Lake is the furthest along. Long shoots with multiple leaves already.
The photo doesn't really give you the same effect. When you're stood next to it, it looks much fuller and leafy because it's shooting out along every cane.
Most advanced bush is hard to pick, as they're very similar. But my potted Lady Emma Hamilton has some nice chunky new growth. Desdemona also similar level of growth, slightly fewer new shoots but with a new basal.
But for pretty photos and rose knowledge, you have all of us well-beaten, @Marlorena.
Dog has bitten a cane off my new Love Song bareroot. 🥵 Four becomes three... I am going to have to protect them with little fences or paeony supports.
Arthur Bell is my furthest along but a whole rose shot just focuses on the fence! So here are some leaves... I haven't actually finished pruning this yet, not sure how it is March already. 🙄
Last autumn, I vowed to remove scentless Queen Elizabeth (which has been here at least since 1967) and hacked away half its stump, but I haven't had the time or will to try to dig it up yet, as it is all entwined with horrible ivy... but it doesn't want to give up without a fight... might grow a geranium over the ugly stump and let it bloom again if it wants to so very badly. Chandos B has nice shiny red leaves... Though as newbie pointed out Emily B's is really lovely. Definitely my other favourite Austin apart from LoS and the Lark Ascending.
Though the new potted Alnwick from C&K Jones is a mass of pretty green leaves and I think this one might be a future fav!
Many of the new roses are far behind yours though... it is quite an exposed and chilly windy garden so I'll blame that instead of my own lack of green fingers. 😉
Well I think they're all doing really well.. I'm not sure I could dig up a rose from the 60s, might leave that to someone else.. When I first saw Emily Bronte in GC I struggled to resist as that foliage is just so good.. Losing that cane on Love Song will probably do it good and reshoot with a big fat basal.. you can thank your little doggie later..
Lady of the Lake looks ahead of most of ours so far..

Maybe you could plant that chewed off cutting.
and I think I know where I'd be inclined to plant it !!
