Only one more day before the inferno ends …..hang on in there.
Another inside day methinks - got a zoomy thing this morning, then more reading and stitching this afternoon. Have been pleased with the way our house has behaved - our living spaces are north facing, so that helps a lot. And the insulation works both ways I suppose. My sister is suffering - she is a teacher and had a class of 30+ 10 year olds in a 33degree classroom yesterday. Plus she then had to stay at school til 7 for parents evenings. And today she has to do it all over again. Horrid.
The garden seems to have survived so far - I expected more wilting casualties, but so far so good 🤞🏻
Looking at the thermometer we got to 39.7 yesterday ... I forgot to check the night-time temp before I pressed the button ... probably just as well ... I don't need to know. I've watered all the pots , toms, squashes etc, given the lollipop bay, fig etc a good deep drink, and topped up the bird baths etc ... our flimsiest nightwear has had a rinse and is on the line.
I've scraped some potatoes and theyi're cooking to have as a potato salad this evening with cold sausages, tomatoes, courgette vinaigrette etc. ... now I''ve got nearly a kilo of runner beans to get ready for the freezer ... Ive never had so many runners this early in the season ... at this rate I'll need to buy another freezer ... there are some blackfly on them but they're absolutely smothered with ladybirds chomping away ... ten years of not using any insecticides is certainly paying off
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
When I woke this morning the air smelt faintly of burning and the sky looks misty. It's the smoke coming from the forest fires south of Bordeaux, 2 hours drive away. People in Dordogne have been ringing the fire brigade but the local paper has told them not to. Over 37000 people have now been evacuated. A lot of them are holiday makers in coastal campsites.
I'm going to a Garden Club meeting of their rose group this afternoon with a friend.
Off to do some weeding in the veg garden before it gets too hot. It should be cooler today than yesterday and there may be storms tonight.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
Morning everyone having managed to keep the house to around 26-27 yesterday, we started at 25 here this morning and not a breath of wind. All closed up here too. A trip to the SM is on the cards today, I normally moan its too cold in there but today I think it will be a welcome relief. We do need some things so it's not just to get out of the heat. Doesn't looked like we will get any of the rain tomorrow. 🙁
That’s our lot for the summer, very loud thunder, pouring with rain, low temperatures, same every year, always as the kids break up, so does the weather.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Morning all, we have cloud cover, absolute bliss. The doors and windows are wide open and the watering done. The peppers have sun scorch and one or two tomatoes also, but I kept the leaves and side shoots on them this year which seems to have paid off. Take care all, catch up with you later.
Stay safe everyone, especially those who have to work today. Hats off to the delivery drivers, the refuse collectors, the firefighters, the health and care workers... When it comes down to it, as it did in the lockdowns, we know who the people we rely on are. Hedge funders and venture capitalists - it's not you! Gentle pottering this morning and flopping this afternoon is in order methinks.
Afternoon hotties!! I put our mattresses (2 single ones on our electric bed) out in the sun on these sort of days. Apparently, a mattress can contain up to 4 litres of water. So it's good to put our pillows, cushions and mattresses to dry out.
