Forgot to ask what peoples thoughts are on miniature dahlias? I didn’t think much of them but they have grown on me over the season.

  • I like them @Alfie_ they seem to be much lower maintenance than the bigger ones, for me anyway!  And generally pollinator friendly unlike the flash ones.

I grew Mignon mixed last year and didn't like them at all. There were some sulphur yellow in their that isn't my thing at all. I composted them all before the end of the season.

Last year and this I have grown Aruna which is pitched as a "window box dahlia", but is nothing of the kind. It gets to about two cubic feet - much too big for any window box. But It's an easy to manage, compact dahlia and I will keep it. It's the smallest one I now grow.

Below is one plant. It's crazy to state that it would be happy in a window box.

I grew Red pygmy this year in a border to fill a gap.  I wasn't expecting much but it did a great job adding extra interest.

    Wirral. Sandy, free draining soil.

I just noticed that one of my tree dahlias has buds. Squeeeee - my first ever tree dahlia buds. I didn't think I would get any this year as the trees are in stupidly small pots. All the rain has helped and the warm temps.

    😱
