My dahlias are still going strong into Oct. All planted from half price tubers bought from Wilko this year and some online discounted ones from last year. Happy enough with the results...
My rather strange looking dahlias because, having moved in late spring to a house without a flower bed I had to do something with them. I put them in extra large tomato grow bags and they've grown quite healthily but straggly. Now i've dug a flower bed in a sunny position, next year I hope they'll be fine after overwintering in the garage. I'm quite fond of them as I grew them from seed about 4 years ago. usually the flowers are bigger.
That's sad to hear. Despite being tied in during the week (as I knew winds were coming) several branches broke off, but my dahlias have been flowering for months and are now going over (as other people's are peaking). Weekly tom feed makes all the difference to get the best flowering. No matter how well I stake the dahlia in pots, I have to constantly restake and re-enforce through the season, as some are as tall as me and get heavy. Some, like the tree dahlias, I tie to the fences.

I'm glad they came good in the end. Did you lose any?

These are all tubers bought this year / overwintered in pots and boxes. I lost the one left in the ground, and a few that had shrivelled (in shredded paper) / rotted (perhaps watered too much while starting them in early Spring). I'll stick to using old compost to overwinter in pots / boxes.Â
Jim's take in potting up dahlias in the spring to get them going early. He has a good reputation as a grower. There are lots of different ways of skinning the cat, but this is one good way. Keep the pots frost free.
