@Fire thanks for the info, i will try to look for those discussions about roses in hot, south climates.
@Marlorena so true about colours changing and fading a lot in the sun. i also planted Penny Lane last autumn, but someone told me it will look like a white rose here in full sun. it has a few buds, hasn't opened yet, i am very curious about it.Â
So this might get crickets, but it could be fun to have a group mooch around a rose garden in June. Anyone interested in a day out somewhere? For me it’d have to be somewhere northernish, but someone else could organise a southern one.Â
The rose crew are also very welcome over to visit me - if you fancy a trip to N8 sometime. There will be tea and cake here and an open door. 🌼
@Woodgreen - I like that Chapeau de Napoleon bud - very interesting sepals.
It's classed as a moss rose by some sellers, and a centifolia by others. I think the foliage has a scent too, or so it seems to me when I'm dead heading etc. It's once flowering but has the most wonderful old rose scent. It balls in a wet spell unfortunately, and does get black spot but I look forward to it flowering every year. It has developed a habit of throwing up new canes at a distance from the main plant which is unfortunate as I don't get enough replacement canes now. It's quite some age now, twenty years or so, I think.
Does anyone paint the stakes propping up their standard roses, and if so with what? Garden paint seems possibly too toxic. I'm worried about poisoning the trunk/stem.
Wood, "I have spotted a bud on Lady of the Lake but won't let on I've seen it....." Ha! So just gotta play it cool, yeah? Athelas, just a nigella / love in a mist. I do like them and their spiky cosmos-esque foliage.
Gorgeous roses all. I keep thinking about that Pierre de Ronsard and the Versigny posted a few days ago!
@WhereAreMySecateurs ooh you have Rosa des cistertiens too? I love mine, such a performer. Hopefully flowers open today.
@Victoria Sponge that would be angel eyes probably. Ive got eyes for you and for your eyes only but Angel Eyes I dont think anyone else has. I love the hulthemias. Ive got orienta aladdin the new climbing one too but not out yet.
Oh now you have got me googling @JessicaS and I have just found a rather lovely one called Bull's Eye. Fortunately it doesn't seem easily available.
Yes, think you are right, Angel Eyes, but I like Eyes for You as well  Orienta Aladdin looks rather interesting, I wasn't aware of that one, look forward to seeing it.
Skylark had opened. It is very floppy bit I'm not surprised as it is on its first year and the blooms are cupped and large.
I was worried about what shade of pink it would be bit really like it. I imagine it will pale with age.
Scent is very subtle currently but we've had cooler temps. It definitely smells different to my other roses.
@Victoria Sponge I have the two same eyes roses as @JessicaS, I love them and keep looking at tiger eyes but worried that it might become a monster like for your eyes only which is much bigger than anticipated.
@AlliumPurpleSensation, I have Eye of the tiger, the label says 2.5 ft which I translated as 70cm. I think it was planted in August 2020 and is easily that height and spread already. It's been flowering for about 4 weeks already and was still flowering in November last year.
