    @Fire
    thanks for the info, i will try to look for those discussions about roses in hot, south climates.

    @Marlorena
    so true about colours changing and fading a lot in the sun. i also planted Penny Lane last autumn, but someone told me it will look like a white rose here in full sun. it has a few buds, hasn't opened yet, i am very curious about it.

    @Woodgreen - I like that Chapeau de Napoleon bud - very interesting sepals.

    It's classed as a moss rose by some sellers, and a centifolia by others. I think the foliage has a scent too, or so it seems to me when I'm dead heading etc. It's once flowering but has the most wonderful old rose scent. It balls in a wet spell unfortunately, and does get black spot but I look forward to it flowering every year. It has developed a habit of throwing up new canes at a distance from the main plant which is unfortunate as I don't get enough replacement canes now. It's quite some age now, twenty years or so, I think.

    Does anyone paint the stakes propping up their standard roses, and if so with what? Garden paint seems possibly too toxic. I'm worried about poisoning the trunk/stem.

    Wood, "I have spotted a bud on Lady of the Lake but won't let on I've seen it....." Ha! So just gotta play it cool, yeah?
    Athelas, just a nigella / love in a mist. I do like them and their spiky cosmos-esque foliage.

    Gorgeous roses all. I keep thinking about that Pierre de Ronsard and the Versigny posted a few days ago!

    Oh now you have got me googling @JessicaS and I have just found a rather lovely one called Bull's Eye. Fortunately it doesn't seem easily available.

    Yes,  think you are right, Angel Eyes, but I like Eyes for You as well :)  Orienta Aladdin looks rather interesting, I wasn't aware of that one, look forward to seeing it.
