I’m glad you said that yourself @Katsa, I was thinking ‘I would just chuck that if I were her’ but I know my OH, for example, would throw up her hands in horror at the mere suggestion!

I’m more sad that I persevered! And I’m worried that my climber for the front of the house has the same disease as it also has the same yellowish leaves and stunted growth. I might have a look tomorrow. I’ll be so sad as I really want a rose to grow up the front of the house and there’s only one place to plant one so if it’s diseased I don’t know what I’ll do!

..your shed roses are going to look fantastic, can't wait to see them in full bloom..

    @zugenie
I have Silas Marner, I used to have Thomas a Becket.   I've abused Silas by moving it twice, but now it's settled down and is growing away well, and covered in buds, it will shortly be flowering.  The spring foliage is quite beautiful as well, and yes it's got a good scent to my nose.
It flops a bit and I've had to prop it up but it's not really developed yet.  I've got a short obelisk close by as I think it'll need it..  I have a feeling this rose will become a favourite very soon..

...they're going to look fabulous @Pianoplayer

.. beautiful gardens @Nollie  and @Victoria Sponge  earlier, love that bridge..

..thank you.. No I don't do anything here, everything lives whatever and does what it wants to do, I like to see a snail family.. I'm a strange one in that I actually like aphids too, I find them fascinating little creatures, and if there is one on my hand, I gently put it back on a rose..
.. I do like to try and prove that you can grow an ornamental garden this way [I no longer grow fruit and veg].. without fuss and bother..  I feed my roses but otherwise I don't feed the chemical industry..
...  Delphiniums I buy fresh each year as potted plants and grow them more as annuals.. they're already a foot high at time of planting.. it's been very dry this Spring, hardly seen any slugs..
    ..seen here with some Austins..

Great idea to put them in at a foot tall. I will try that next year.
    Thanks for sharing.

@JessicaS no it’s blushing bridesmaid, but I did see josephine and it’s very similar
  • I have a question that I wonder if you could help with please?

We just moved to a house that was unoccupied for almost two years. The garden is over run with weeds. One border has around eight mature roses in but they are being smothered by ground elder, green alkanet, nettles, giant thistles etc.

I am adverse to chemicals but I can’t see another way of getting this under control. I have dug out a few perennials that were trying to grow but what to do about the roses?
If I was to cut them right down so that no foliage remained would they withstand the spray and would they then come back again?
Or should I try to cover them with something?

I really don’t want to spray but the border is very long, around 25 metres and 2-3 metres deep so I can’t see that I will ever get on top of the problem by digging the weeds out. Unless someone knows better?
