To balance that up....I'm not sure 'political' doctrines haven't been used in the same way. You just don't realise it all yet. When we look back in 1000 years and see what people got away with because of this or that ideal... Religion was just one abused power...and it's all just about that power - call it religion, politics, commerce. Power is all consuming and corrupting - it is the Ring. You can't wield it without being affected. Trump kept and keeps on trying to get back his 'precious'. Boris did the same. Putin is trying now. Maggie did it with the Falklands. Blair and WOMD. All politicians end up believing the spin that their spin doctors spiral around them.
Very few children are subjected to political doctrine compared with the millions of children whose brainwashing begins at birth. How many week old boys ask / agree to be circumcised in the name of religion?
I'm not particularly interested in football. However, I think it was badly done that nobody from the UK of any consequence managed to find the time to attend. The Spanish queen ( I didn't know they even had one) made the effort. The clip of William and his daughter reminded me of that Tory MP that fed his daughter a burger at the height of the mad cow thing.

I thought the Sports Minister was being sent. He would seem to be the most appropriate person to attend. The clue surely is in the job title. If William had attended there would have been far more people complaining about the cost of him getting there. Talk about "Damned if you do, damned if you don't"
Also a Brit won the bronze medal in the men's 100m, with the same time as the silver medal winner. That didn't even get a mention on the national news. Shame on the BBC
Little point for anyone "official" to attend in person surely - visible to all ( unfortunately ) and they'd be better off getting down to business. True football fans - fine if they can afford to travel and enjoy the excitement, chanting and jumping up and down but the whole run up to the game has never been off the TV or Radio and no doubt the actual match has taken over today's media outlets . Whoever wins, no doubt there will be endless coverage as to why 1 won and the other lost ( simple really - between 2 competitors that's usually the outcome ). What really T's me off is that people with a loud voice ( such as the PM ) come out with the statement that " ...the whole nation is rooting for England ". Patently not the case and just shows how out of touch such people are. Bit odd when the govt has happily given permission for developers to build on various playing fields. Doesn't quite gel IMO. If someone enjoys Football, that's fine but consider those who don't and have to put up with the barrage of who hugged who, who fell over and blamed someone else, etc, etc . Ah, just learned that Spain won. I was about to say that's a relief but now I expect we will be treated to all the "experts" explaining why........... whoopee !!
