What a noz!  Like a someone from Star Wars.

     - -

This is one of the dark / black bees that I can't place. Our neighbourhood dry garden is covered with them. Any ideas?

    ----

I saw this butterfly fly past and it seemed enormous. I suppose it's an boring as a large white - it just seemed so big and interesting...  Not a great pic.

A better picture for you for IDing. I think there were both small meadow browns and larger gate keepers around.  You can see the double spot more clearly here.

I like the beedy eye and the curly tongue.

    That is a Gatekeeper.

The sticky-out bit like a drumstick is indeed a halter. It bounces up and down in flight and so acts like a giroscope.

It’s always a special moment when I see them in the garden. And there were three of them!
  • I went for a walk in this field this morning where 2 years ago i had a great time - I saw so many butterflies, many I'd not seen outside of a book. Today was dire, very disappointing. Around ten gatekeepers and that was practically it. Lots of skippers and marbled whites before. I went to do my final butterfly count as it's the last day, but didn't get much to report.
