Insects of the day (2)

Considering that discussion "Insects of the day" has been running for 5 years now, and has reached 180 pages, I am creating this sequel discussion.

First 2 sightings of the year in the garden today: one carpenter bee (Xylocopa violacea) and one Peacock Butterfly, Inachis io. No pics, unfortunately.

Thanks @Papi Jo - 31,000 views for the last insect thread is pretty impressive and sharing a lot of excitement with a lot of people.
  • A huge bumble bee over the last few days and a couple of much smaller bees (no idea which ones) feeding on the sarocococca flowers.

A few bees buzzing around. Some bee flies and saw the first hummingbird hawk moth of the year yesterday. I love watching the latter up close and they don't mind my close presence.

  • On the Allotments today,  I saw a bee on my shed door jamb. I think it was a honey bee, but it looked a bit small, some people do have hives,  I don't think it would have found much forage, maybe the odd weed in flower.

Still early for bug hunting here but this one came to us by accident today. My oldest boy was collecting pine cones and this ladybird fell out of one. If I'm right this should be the Cream-streaked Ladybird (Harmonia quadripunctata) that is a pine tree specialist, feeding on pine aphids and overwintering in the host trees. Cropped phone photo sorry.

If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

Saw two hoverflies on Thursday, probably long blown away by now!
I've got a ladybird overwintering in a scabious, I have to keep checking he's ok in the wind 😆, so far so good.

Found this chap overwintering under a calendula in front garden when I moved its leaves aside to check some bulbs. Interesting colour! I left him undisturbed.

At least it won't get nappy rash.

A hibernating butterfly dreaming of summer flowers.
