I'm always wary of media reports about false widow spiders but this comes from a scientific paper by the looks of it. The article also mentions a report of one catching a lizard. I guess they're a bit more fierce than they look :o
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I saw a widow in my shed last week about the size of my palm. I admit it gave me a shock, even though I expect to find them there. Not hairy but larger than I have seen before. I can't say I relish them at close quarters, i.e. near my hair.
  • Is this one? Photo taken last summer.

Spotted this minuscule critter on my Camellia flower today. No idea what it can be.
  • Found this moth when I raised the shop shutters yesterday morning. It was probably 4 maybe 5cm across. I assume it must've been disturbed from its overwintering spot?

That's a beauty. An Oak Beauty if you want to be specific. They're one of the early spring moths that are out and flying now.

A male mosquito of some kind. The males get the fancy eyebrows and the females get the bloodsucking needles.

I left the back door open in the week (15oC t shirt weather this week in London) and the house filled with mozzies. Sigh.

I set the moth trap out last night hoping to catch one moth and I caught exactly that. One March Moth. A fairly common moth but you only get a few weeks to catch one each year. This is a male as the females are flightless but they like hawthorns and fruit trees and I have both in the garden. I like the stylish wing pattern on this one.
