I’m changing all our duvets over to cotton now, cover and filling, our summer one will fit in the machine I think. The old ones can go to an animal charity who use them for beddings mats.
Gardening on the wild, windy west side of Dartmoor.
Afternoon everyone, and hello to newcomers and returnees. Can't believe our luck we have managed a morning walk and got back just before the rain 2 days in a row. There's talk of the weather turning colder again, no bad thing (sorry Hosta I know you hate the cold) but things need a proper period of dormancy, and I haven't finished the winter pruning yet. I was looking in a new seed catalogue yesterday & noted a more limited selection compared to last years. Veg seed of course. 😄
Afternoon all. OH is doing the ironing, I am supposed to be editing and naming a whole file of photographs of the shops in our town to go onto the town website. Oops - I'm here instead! One of our town councillors received an MBE in the new year's honours list, for the work she did in getting the community response to covid properly co-ordinated after an initial grassroots response. Good for her - but there was a whole team of people who worked really hard on that, and continue to work on it as there are still vulnerable people isolating who need prescriptions, shopping etc. Each and every one of those volunteers deserves a medal in my book!
@didyw ... I know that the idea is that these awards are a sort of token of appreciation to all involved, but I knw exactly what you mean ... is there a possibility that one day the town council might set up a sort of Roll/Book of Appreciation so that people in the town could nominate people who have gone above and beyond to help during the pandemic ........... names and examples of how they helped would be lovely .... and a wonderful document for future generations ... even little gestures have meant the difference to some folk and it would be so good to record them.
Gardening in Central Norfolk on improved gritty moraine over chalk ... free-draining.
Ah, there's a thought Dove! The TC do have the civic awards and anyone can nominate anyone else for those. But there is only one in the category this would fall into (the two others are for sports and youth). A roll call of honour would be good! Our town is built on voluntary work - it's one of the things I love about it. There could also be a roll of dishonour for all those who do nothing but expect everything to be done to their satisfaction by others and who shout about it from the sidelines on Facebook!
Been starting to have a tidy and clean. I noticed a small patch of damp wall by the front door, which happens occasionally after wet, windy, cold and dark conditions. There was a bit of mildew on the fabric blind too, so that’s been washed (in the bath then a spray of lemon juice, then a line dry until it started raining). I also swept some leaves outside and BAM! pulled my back bending to pick them up. I now have heat rub on and a heat cushion.
I hope you are all well and making the most of fine weather/time off work/time with loved-ones, leftover festive food etc.
I was having trouble with the duvet as all the filling was clumping up, when I looked at the label I realized it was over 20 years old, so I guess there is no shame to replacing it. We got one with summer & winter ie two thinner duvets that connect together. To be honest it would work better for me if I could have a “thin” half with a thicker for hubby as even during winter I overheat. I will keep the old one for the cat, I’ll probably cut it down into a couple of smaller cat bed inserts that I can easily throw into the washer.
Marne la vallée, basically just outside Paris 🇫🇷, but definitely Scottish at heart.
Afternoon all, we woke up late again but there was sunshine whilst we were having breakfast in bed which inspired me to get up and get out in the garden whilst it was good. Picked off all the wisteria leaves from the undergrowing purple bearded irises and tidied them up too. Had my head down (and bottom up) whilst cutting down the crocosmia clump in the same bed and thought, hang on, I'm getting wet! It was pouring with rain and I hadn't really noticed. So that was the end of gardening today. Enjoyed a lovely telephone chat with my daughter, who's still got bulbs to plant. She was busy with spring-cleaning (already!) which made me feel somewhat guilty as I'd much rather garden than housework. I want to take down the tree and decs in a minute as I don't like them up for long after Xmas. Take it easy @AuntyRach, pulled backs are no fun at all. That's a good idea @Dovefromabove and @Diddyw, there's always a lot of unsung heroes in the background. Did you get any gardening done after all @Busy-Lizzie? DD - New Year's resolution for you - don't overdo it!
Had to do a mercy dash to the RSPB shop in the local farm shopping complex. We’d run out of peanuts, Tutu would not be pleased! The sun came out while we were there so we took the opportunity for a walk round the field, and got back to the car just as it started raining. Prepped lunch and had to go down to the utility room to get a new kitchen roll. Emptied the washing machine while I was down there and forgot the kitchen roll. Went back down and came up with some cans of beer. Third trip resulted in the new bag of peanuts, still no kitchen roll! Fourth time lucky! It’s not just me, is it?
