The bushes are gone, along with a lot of stumps!! I’m not tackling the left side this year (other than the brambles and the conifer being removed by a tree surgeon) so I’m leaving that as is to provide cover for the birds and other wildlife this year! The garden feels much bigger now and we unearthed what I think is a rose!
The soil is an absolute dream, I can’t wait to get planting in it
This is what we removed today, there’s another 3 that we took out last weekend not pictured!
Edit/ forgot to say the shrub that remains is what I believe to be weigela florida variegata, from memory of when we viewed it!
I ended up removing the weigala as it’s in the wrong place so we ended up with this
I started digging it over as I want to loosen it up after we were walking all over it, and also get as much of the bramble, nettle, and bindweed roots out as possible.
I marked out the depth as well so I know how far I need to come out, the bamboo canes are as far as I’m going for this year, but next year when we do the bulk of the work this bed is going to curve around the grass. The bamboo stick with a pot on is where the tree will be going, I’m thinking of getting a multistem amelanchier ‘robin hill’
I’m going to cover this with cardboard and put some well rotted manure on top to try and keep the weeds at bay!
I was back out for a bit more digging today as we’ve bought our tree! After seeing a photo of a very underwhelming looking tree with a hefty price tag online, I decided to have a look and see what we could get from a local garden centre and have managed to get a large multi stem amelanchier lamarckii! Gets a little bigger than robin hill but I’ll trim if it starts to get too big!
Ready to dig a big hole! The soil here is so lovely but full of shards of glass!!
An honourable mention for this huge nettle root that I dug out today!
woah your soil is so nice where are the rocks, builders rubble, piles of chalk and manky pale clumps??
I find it so interesting seeing before-during-after pictures, looking forwards to the next ones
I had more than my fair share of all those things in my last garden 😆 this has large stones, broken glass, and today what looked like some rusted wire!!
Thank you! I really enjoy them too and I wanted to be able to look back on what I’ve achieved!
A greenhouse came with the property we bought. After selling it (GH) cos it was much too big and badly maintained we dug up several buckets of glass. As it had been in the same family for about 60 - odd years we reckoned it was from broken panes over the years. Why it wasn't put in the dustbin we'll never know.
