Much calmer today, sun shining but very cold. The big pond had a small rim of ice yesterday, but much more has frozen overnight and the ducks are swimming round in a small area of water they have managed to keep open. Small pond is iced over.
Fortunately seems to be little major damage, though lots of shrubs have been flattened by the snow, which is now frozen solid. Took a peek at my greenhouse, will need some work to open the door, but peering through the bubble wrap, I could still make out some green plants standing, so hopefully that's alright
Better day here today - been for a proper dog walk this morning to see what's what (yesterday's was a head down, muffled to the eyeballs, stomp around and get it over with affair). Last weekend's autumn colour is all gone, of course. One big beech tree down on the bridle way, one large blue fir toppled over in the woods, broken branches and twigs scattered everywhere, some really deep drifts of leaves for the dogs to play in. It was icy this morning but very pleasant to be out. The garden is OK, the brassicas were already at some fairly rakish angles and are now even more drunken, but still with their roots in the ground. No fences down this time, just a few pots gone awol, a couple of chairs tipped over.

My 80-year-old brother-in-law, on his own in Grange over Sands because his 84-year-old wife is in hospital in Preston with a broken hip and an infection, has been without electricity for over 24 hours. He's finally been permitted to visit his wife after a fortnight during which she's been shuffled between hospitals, and had planned a visit by train today, but of course the trains have been disrupted because of fallen trees... hopefully his son will be able to take him tomorrow by car. Meanwhile he has a gas fire and a gas hob, so at least he can keep warm... wish we could do something for him though...
Since 2019 I've lived in east Clare, in the west of Ireland.
