ROSES Autumn/Winter Season 2021/22

  • All my roses have been very badly neglected this year with one thing or another, especially so from August onwards. I am keen to make amends.

Firstly, I will need to move 4 or 5 to a new spot as I have given up on my little rose patch at the bottom of the garden, the farmer and his bracken/nettles/brambles have won. :( When is the best time to dig them up and replant them in their new spot (closer to the front door so they will be cared for better) ?

Secondly, for the ones that have been left to their own devices and are now straggly to say the least, is it a good idea to cut them right back now or should I wait? My Blue For You actually has buds on it... Some are climbers others are just shrub roses, all need attention.

New year, new hope, must try harder.

As ever, any advice very much appreciated.

  • Afternoon everyone.  I have taken advantage of the Trevor White potted sale and bought New Dawn and Rambler ‘Purity’.  Apart from the info on the TW website, I can find nothing on ‘Purity’ anywhere on the net 🤷🏼‍♀️  Anyone have any experience of this rose and/or any pictures?  Thanks in advance.

@D0rdogne_Damsel I would say now is the time to dig them up and pot/plant them. Regarding pruning, I would say you should go ahead and cut them back unless they are once flowering varieties.

I have today cut back my Blue for You @D0rdogne_Damsel , which had a large amount of leaf and an odd bud. It was 5ft and is now 3ft. If yours needs more than this cutting you can do it, just be aware that it might just sulk this year. It will flower, just not as profusely,  but will come back and flower with a vengeance the year after. Hope this helps.😁
  • Thank you @cooldoc and @purplerallim

Can I ask, for the ones I dig up, do I need to find really big pots or can I trim some root off, that is, if they turn out to be really big/long? And what do I plant them in, just compost, or manure and compost?  Do I trim the branches right back too?

They are DA roses, Pat Austin, Charles Renee Mackintosh and Jean Mermoz and a couple of unknowns.

@Mr. Vine Eye those look like DA catalogue pics  <3

@D0rdogne_Damsel I had planted few 1 year old potted ones to the ground during autumn. Lots of fibrous roots broke off and the others I trimmed off. Gave the shoots a good trim as well and did not give any special care except watering in well. They are doing well. As Purplerallim mentioned they might take time to be back to their glory but should survive ok.

From what I gather, these roses are being discontinued by David Austin, and may already be gone ..

    Munstead Wood
    Lady Emma Hamilton
    Jude the Obscure
    Crown Princess Margarita

.. these are the ones I know so far..  it will also be difficult to obtain them anywhere else,.. possibly TCL might be an option.. I haven't checked..
