This is very helpful @Tack. I will order from Wickes. I hadn't thought of top soil before your suggestion.

..just to say I've also had the Wickes top soil, it's very  good and I add other stuff to it, including fertilizer of course..   it's like John Innes without the fertz added..

...did you all get the DA Handbook of Roses?  I thought it was very good, some interesting stuff..   I've not seen anyone else mention it.  Not impressed?..

I got it but haven't looked deliberately, I don't want to be tempted. But I am impressed they have shed the glossy non-eco paper, quite a brave move.

Would you not use a John Innes 3 type mix?
I dont drive and unable to find it for a reasonable price home delivered.
I use Wickes too as they are the only large, national company that delivers to me (I have no car and drops are easy to me curbside). Also they offer a 3 for 2, or similar, at various periods through the year. So all in, it's worked prety well. My local garden centre also do home deliveries now.

My local Sainsbury's has got Levington's multi-purpose bags at £5 each or £10 for 3. I didn't notice the size but they weren't overally big, maybe 50 litres?  Might get some tomorrow if there's any left. First visit for 2 years, it was busy, I'm so glad we have home delivery.
