No the pale ones were best with fresher blooms but I mostly had dark/rich colours, here at the base of a willow tunnel the couple constructed 8 months earlier and which is still going strong, too strong. This is it then, very pretty for them to walk through and say their vows beneath.
Interesting dye experiments! Thanks for sharing. The petal confetti is gorgeous. I had it at my wedding too although I cheated and brought it. Some of my favourite pics of the day are us laughing walking down a line of guests in a big shower of petals. It was all clinging to my train veil and hair
I cut most of the open roses today and brought them in as the weathers foul. I dont like autumn gardening when its wet, but I love spring though so I end up doing a lot of it anyway planting hundreds of bulbs! I think I have planted about 300 so far, still got lots left to do, mostly tulips which I love.
Natalija throwing up a tall cluster, I will let them open more... For your eyes only - poking through a nearby james grieve apple tree - extra bright currently and oddly the faintest whiff of scent too, very classic musky smell but super faint!
Domestic issues got in the way for me this past month, so getting back to roses... things have got delayed somewhat.. ..2 nice bare roots arrived today from Beales... both with 5 canes and big roots, so very pleased.. 'Smarty'.. planted out.. 'St. Nicholas'.. potted as I'm not sure what I'm doing with this one.. ..late flower on Sally Holmes..
..pruning 'Forever Royal'.. a 5.5 foot floribunda, back to about 2.5 feet. I don't want it too short.. centre opened up and any cankered canes removed.. no crossing branches.. healthy shoots.. 'Desdemona' pruned back to about 2 foot.. I require it to be about 3.5 to 4 foot by June.. this rose is susceptible to canker and yellowing canes, which I don't like too much, so I remove some of the worst and opened up the centre.. 'Vanessa Bell' is a 10 second job, as it's in a wind tunnel so avoidance of wind rock is critical.. the top growth is thin and wispy so I just sheared off top and sides to stabilise.. this will do until Spring when I'll check it again.. but I want to keep some height with it..
oh, the pink rose is 'Frilly Cuff'.. still going..
That's good to see @Marlorena. Funnily enough I was thinking of you re your pruning advice this afternoon as I started pruning my climbing 'New Dawn'., the first of my roses to drop all it's leaves. I kept stepping back and looking at it and thinking well, what would Marlorena do next! Think I've done it okay, it is of course in the wrong place on a shed but I didn't appreciate then that it wanted to climb and climb and climb. I was in two minds this year whether to give it the chop or not, it's over ten years old now but I do love the colour of the blooms.
Thank you @Marlorena for posting pruning photos. Very useful for me.
I managed to mow the soggy mess lawn. Mower wasn't picking wet grass clippings and leaves, so I just let it mulch. By the time I finished it was dark. I will take a photo in light tomorrow. I have small electric Bosch mower so it takes a while to do whole lot. I have to say, it did a good job considering how wet everything was.
@Marlorena Thank you for the pictures. I am a learner and they're indeed useful. This is the first time I am going to do pruning and hopefully a proper one! I was after the advice and Thank you @JessicaS for initiating.
Thank you @Marlorena super useful! My Rhapsody in blue is a bit leggy if you dont mind when it finishes I'll take a pic for advice on how much to prune it as I got it from colin gregory and he said it needed to be hard pruned and I think I'm a bit too soft with it!
Pleased with my bare roots so far, Odyssey arrived, (im so excited for that one!) along with wild rover and ive got fetzer syrah and bridge of sighs due to arrive today.
After mowing a tidy looking garden for the moment. The little orange dots on left are Roses Lady of Shallot and Super Trouper. Both of them keep on flowering. Mine are in shady side. My neighbour has Lady of Shallot standard on other side of fence which is lovely sunny spot and it is full of flowers like spring.
