@daisym If you'd like to try a bush that has dark red blooms of a similar type, with a strong scent, then Barkarole might suit you. It has long stems, which are good for cutting. If interested, and if you have space, you could plant three shrubs together to give a fuller display and more blooms. I find mine to have a very upright, quite stiff habit - which is why they are good for cutting. Not a very 'naturalistic' look. It has very pretty red/copper foliage and one major flush, quite late in the year. Mine, here pictured, is squeezed into a tight space behind a door and pruned accordingly. It would normally be bushier. With thick, velvety petals, the flowers last very well in water. This is the most robust, heavy-weight red rose, of the five I grow.
Re 'Variegata di Bologna'.. now it's been a long time since I had it, about 30 years, so memory fades, but it was a lanky grower and can be trained as a climber, to some 10 feet, however I loved the blooms and kept it in shrub form with pruning.. very suitable for pegging the canes, which I probably did but can't remember... I grew it in Cornwall with typically moist conditions at the roots, and it is said to grow better with a cooler root run, so don't be afraid of placing it in a more northerly facing site..
A garden near to me grows it on an arch where it goes right over the top..
I found it romantic, I was drawn to it but if you want something similar and more compact then 'Ferdinand Picard' might suit, or for the very modern there's 'Scentimental' which if I'm honest I find rather gaudy..
@pitter-patter yes it is lovely, its a Dickson one, I like that type too - ive got odyssey new this year as well! Clearly similar tastes If your in a similar area, its great rose soil! Im Nottingham way.
Hi all, frustratingly haven’t been able to log on for a while so couldn’t join in although I have been following all your lovely chat and enjoying the roses and CLEMatis pics!
Still bluddy waiting for my standard @Tack, new delivery date was yesterday but still no sign. It’s always the local couriers on the last leg that let me down. Hope it’s not a dried up husk when it finally gets here. Also coming with are Mrs Oakley Fisher and Alister Stella Grey. The latter is to replace MAC in my new soft cream/yellows/peaches rose bed as I decided it didn’t really go, plus @Marlorena was egging me on to get ASG a while back and I succumbed to her powers of influence 😆
@Rojas, my two new baby Princes are re sprouting from the base. They were small, spindly specimens and suffered almost catastrophic dieback. It will be a while before they are strong enough to take their place in the garden proper. My original Prince is a strong and lusty rose though, so at least I have that to console me.

Thank you for such a detailed response! I do have a ferdinand pichard cutting so maybe I’ll put that in as well! It was the size and blousey-ness of the blooms, along with the colour that I liked, thank you for all the information! I’ll definitely get it when DA finally do a discount code!
@zugenie oh good, I'm glad I haven't put you off... do enjoy your rose.. I was going to get one for my place but never quite got around to it..
@Nollie ..delighted you're getting 'ASG'... I shall have to stop influencing, it must be costing people a fortune... maybe I take up knitting?.. or Delphiniums?..
I'm just starting a new thread, you don't need to ask on which subject, but I hope you might have a look in... nothing much that most of you will not have seen before from me, and I've taken a leaf out of someone else's book on Instagram, so to speak, but thought it would be fun during this boring period..
