Hi all, had some lovely sunshine this week. Getting very spring like. Lots of new growth just in the last day or two here. I'll start the new thread on Sunday (Spring Equinox)
I got this today on my way home from work at Lidl. I'd said I wanted an Arabella after seeing it in my in-laws garden.
Funny pot, they all slotted together. It's somewhere between 1 and 2 Litre I think.
I'm going to plant it here, so it can grow into Lady of Shalott and use her as support. I think those two colours will look great together. The roots will be nicely shaded by the shed.
But I'm wondering whether it'll be ok planted as it is now or, because it's going to have to be quite close to a mature plant, should I grow it on this year into a larger pot and then plant it in autumn?
If I do that it might be harder to plant though. Hmm, what do you think?
I would just plant it, they grow perfectly well from those smaller pots, I never grow them on. I can tell you though that this Clematis is prone to mildew, mine got it all over the plant from top to toe one year.. so I removed it.. it was covered in flowers about 5 feet tall at the time.. so you might want to watch out for that.. It was a big plant at purchase, in a 10ltr pot..
Thanks Marlorena, I was leaning towards just planting it.
Means I’ll have to find another spot for my mystery cuttings - I say mystery as I’m not certain where they came from, but we were very close to Graham Thomas when he found the stick, so I’ve got my fingers crossed for that!
They're still green above the soil line - after two weeks - so hope remains that they could take.
@Mr. Vine Eye, when I had Arabella, it was short and didn't climb much. I can't remember anything else though. I have planted clematis from small pots directly in garden. I have lost some to slugs/snails but rest survived.
Yes it's a herbaceous type. Scrambles rather than climbs. In MIL's garden it scrambles up, to about 3-4ft but that's fine for me, I just want it to complement the rose rather than smother the wall. It also fills that gap and will stop me using that corner as a dump! 😁
I have Arabella with Strawberry Hill. Interesting you report mildew problems Marlorena I had that too but assumed that it was a glitch of conditions last year, I wasn't aware clematis got it. But it was pretty to start. I'll give it this year to prove itself
Looks like Darcey Bussel, Blush Noisette and Golden celebration will be the first roses to flower this season in my garden. Unfortunately I'll be away from home for the next month. So, I'll be vicariously enjoying the roses through your photos. I'm looking forward to the wonderful pictures of your new acquisitions as well as old. Keep them coming!
After seeing @Marlorena's suggestion of Star of India clematis, I got one and have planted it among the roses at my son's garden. I'm hoping to get one for my garden after I return.

I’ve planted it now, although I had to completely smash up that wonky pot in order to get it out. Never had to do that with a plant before! Gorgeous day outside. I’ve set the garden bench back up. It was overwintering in the shed. Sat on it to have lunch with my youngest (he’s feeling poorly so staying at home today) while we spotted ladybirds. So many in the garden! Great to see. These photos are all of different ladybirds around the garden.
