So exciting seeing everyone’s new roses, plants and new growth.
I’m so glad it’s Friday, it’s been a stressful and hectic week for various reasons but I did manage to get my Ghislaine de Feligonde standard planted today. That was a struggle, the stem is around 185cm tall as opposed to 160-170cm, so I had to adjust the support I’d already anchored to the ground upwards. I couldn’t fit the top grafts 5-10cm under the support (as per instructions) without burying the rootstock graft either, but the soil level indicated it was buried anyway. Best laid plans and all that!
Glad you found a suitable support @Tack, the one in your photo (the Giverney, I think, what I would have bought if I could have afforded it since it’s designed for weeping roses) does look to be dominating the rose somewhat, possibly planted too low underneath? I don’t know really, being a rose standard virgin.
Here’s GdF pre-planting, in three parts, no idea where my head was yesterday, I counted the top grafts today and there appear to be EIGHT!
The stem, mahogany colour, no idea what it is - any ideas @Marlorena, do I need to be concerned about stem suckering?
Root stock, looks fairly substantial, although French nurseries do like to root prune..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@NewbyDimmock Hello... yes remove any weedy stuff near your rose.
As for pruning, I doubt most here would be happy to advise you without seeing a picture, or the name of the rose, as we're blind to what you are seeing.. but crossing branches don't always need to be removed. If your rose is a large bush then it may not hurt to take out the whole brown cane or you could just shorten the green shoot... Always remember, you don't have to prune anything out if you don't want to, it's not compulsory, just because it says so in books or on t.v. my motto is, if in doubt - leave it on..
@Nollie ... that's a nice top to GdeF... loads of canes, going to look great.. .. as for the interstem with the reddish colour, that wouldn't concern me... couple of knobbly bits might produce a sucker, have to wait and see... easily spotted in any case.. ..the stem looks a bit thin, I would have liked to see it thicker than that for standard roses but it'll soon thicken out..
.. just to add... it's been well root pruned that..
Exciting to grow this rose as a Standard I think.. I for one will be watching with keen interest..
Hi this is probably an impossible question but here goes. My step Daughter has a run of new arches down her garden and space for 4-5 climbers or ramblers. I thought she had chosen and ordered but apparently not. So which 4-5 climbers /ramblers would you pick for a summer long display ? Thanks.
Rosa Roald Dahl doesn't get mentioned much. Are there major downsides?
Also how bad is the blackspot on Munstead Wood? I know Nollie's have been blattered. Is that why they were going to discontinue it? Retiring for health reasons?
Black spot doesn’t seem to bother my MW much at all, to be honest, though my DB gets battered with it every year…
@Fire - whenever I’ve seen Roald Dahl, I’ve been impressed with it. Think it’s meant to do quite well in shade. Not much scent if I remember correctly.
There's one at DA gardens from late August.
Nollie’s Ghislaine standard is also of interest to me. I can’t think of a way of saying “I shall be watching” that doesn’t sound sinister, but maybe that’s just me! Probably doesn’t help that I’m rubbing my hands together in a sinister fashion at the same time.

Can she lead with colour pallete? If she's not wanting pink, or yellow, for example, that would narrow the field a lot. Is scent important? @Allotment Boy

Only 3 more needed.
I might go with these one day and a whole lot others on another..
