All looking good @Tack and the new area sounds great, look forward to hearing your plans for it. Something beginning with R is bound to make it in there I’m sure!
Well after 30+ hours of non-stop rain the garden is breathing a huge sigh of relief. A break this morning allowed me to go and inspect and I found my GdeF standard sopping wet with puddled water on the top of the huge sunken plastic pot its in. Fortunately I haven’t planted up around it yet, so I dug out all the surrounding soil and drilled loads more drainage holes all around the sides so it is currently drying out. Hope I haven’t drowned the poor thing to death! I’m now questioning my rationale for the pot..
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Hello everyone, I’m back! It’s been a while. Many things have happened in the last few months.. with some pretty drastic things happening in my family and I ended up getting a new allotment plot… gosh I feel like I’ve aged years over a few months!
@Marlorena why do you not grow foxgloves from seeds anymore? I just sowed some Dalmatian foxgloves that are meant to flower in its first year.. this will be my second go at sowing foxgloves but my last year’s attempt only yielded mediocre result..
@Tack your roses seem to be way ahead! I have only pruned my roses last week since I was overseas for ages over winter.. i still need to give mine a good feed.
This year I am planning on moving five of my potted roses to my allotment to see how they fare in the ground. I’ve chosen these five based on their performance over the last three years and I felt they were just itching to have more space to grow beyond their pots.. plus now that I have a plot at my dream (and hopefully permanent) allotment I could afford to keep them there for many years to come..
My choices are : Lady Emma Hamilton, Munstead Wood, Port Sunlight, Queen of Sweden and Claire Austin (will be trained to grow up a fence)
I’m really looking forward to seeing how they fare this year!
@Mr. Vine Eye I have raised quite a few lupins from seed last year and they have overwintered well.. I was thinking about using them as companion plants to the roses at my plot but past experience tells me it is probably not a good idea given both lupins and roses are super aphid magnets..! I placed a delivery for a few salvias from Middleton nursery who had a beautiful stand at Chelsea last year.. I wonder if they’re as susceptible to aphids..?
@celcius_kkw - welcome back! Hope you enjoy your new plot.
My lupins haven’t overwintered well at all, they seem to have all died.
My salvia don’t have aphids - they don’t like strong tasting things.
I went to the plot today with my 5 year old and he was an absolute superstar, helping me check the level on the wires, screwing in vine-eyes into the posts and helped me dig and plant the tayberries.
Ive got an Arthur Bell and Kew Gardens there but hoping to have lots more in time.
@Mr. Vine Eye don’t give up on your lupins just yet.. I have kept about 12 from last year and 8 of them have started to sprout from the crown and just when I was about to toss out the rest I noticed that two more actually have tiny leaves emerging too! I believe they’re rather resilient..
@Tack - you could get a waterbutt linking kit and use that to attach the bin to the main downpipe to act as an overflow. That’s what I did with my awkward arrangement - diverter funnels water from downpipe into first butt, first butt overflows into second butt, second butt overflows back into downpipe.
@celcius_kkw Hi Adrian, great to see you again, sorry to hear of your family issues... no I don't bother with Foxglove seeds these days, so I buy in.. it's easier for me. I have a few annuals from seed but that's it..
Your new allotment sounds good, looking forward to your photos later on.. I miss that view !..
Busy couple of days in the garden, looking much tidier. Roses leafing up nicely. As you can see, I had adorably cheeky 'help' with some potting so enjoy the photobombing pups playing too
