I wonder if other countries go on about this sort of thing,  every European country has invaded somewhere in the past. countries still exploiting people, Africa in particular and many South American countries. Maybe they should start pulling down the universities, libraries and theatres that were built on that money at the time. I daren’t start, I’d be banned from every forum on the net 😀

And.. on top of that how many people are now complaining that they can’t get cheap fruit and veg because Brexit has buggered it for us to get cheap labour from poor countries. Im feeling very Curmudgeonly today. Best shut up😀

I know Dove, plenty of people around able bodied enough to pick fruit but not worth it to them because they can get that by sitting at home doing nothing.Â

I don't think it's that @Lyn , so much as if they are on benefits,, Universal Credit or whatever ... seasonal work has a huge inbuilt disadvantage for as having stopped claiming in order to work, they will then have a (5 week I think) waiting period once the seasonal work has ended, before they can claim again ... what are they and their families supposed to live on for that period ?... it's not as if folk on Universal Credit will have built up a nest egg to fall back on 🙄

You'd think the government could sort out some way of making it easier for people to do seasonal work and then go back onto benefits when the work finishes, if they need to. Could be fruit & veg picking, could be pre-Christmas retail or delivery work, whatever. Of course there are always some who would rather not work than do fruit picking or whatever, but I'm sure some would do it if they didn't have to worry about that 5-week wait. Looks better on their CV than doing nowt, if they're serious about finding permanent work.

I have just read that Winston Churchill  has been "cancelled. " ( what a stupid phrase). The Charity in his name have removed all his pictures from the site and renamed it. I am incensed. Don't people realise that without such people( good or bad in their eyes) are responsible for what our countries are today? Yes, I realise that by today's standards, some of the bygone practises are not good, but today's practises should not be applied to our history as our history has put us where we are today. Gawd, it makes me so mad. I am tired of this cancel culture by puritans who know no better. I think it is awful to awful and so wrong to erase the history and bit by bit, they are erasing our culture. Puritanism at its extreme. God help us. I give up, I will walk my own path.....the path which is expanding in front of me is not one I want to walk down at all.Â
The cretins who made the decision to remove him clearly don't understand that without him we almost certainly wouldn't have freedom to criticise some of what he did.
It's not even cheap labour @Lyn ... a fruit farmer on the radio this morning pays £11 per hour plus a bonus, but can't get enough UK workers. Â
The spoke to a fruit farmer on the news recently. They advertised at all their local JobCentre's and only go about a dozen applicants. Of those, only one actually turned up for interview. There were supposedly plans in the past for long term unemployed to be told they had to accept any job offered or have benefits reduced. If that is happening the reduction clearly isn't great enough.
