If people buy ridiculously priced gimmick items it says more about their mentality than that of the producer of said item. Anybody who produces and sells anything wants to get as much as they can for the product. It's up to the potential purchaser to decide whether or not they think the price is acceptable to them.
It's no different to everything produced by Apple being far more expensive than virtually identical items manufactured by other companies. Some people are obsessed with brand names, others look for the best value and couldn't care less about brands and certainly wouldn't pay over the odds for it.
packaging / marketing over content. Just look at the Spice Girls. None of them can sing ( point me towards a beautiful song if you disagree with me) but they've sold millions of records.
Spice girls fulfilled a market place. You are or were not part of their marketplace. The talent is in identifying and fulfilling the market's needs and in the prices making money and creating jobs.
Singing ability in its purist sense isn't the criteria success is measured by in this market. Attitude, image and presence. How much of that comes from the manager creating the image/ talent or the people forming the Talent I really don't know. However to write them off as having no talent is to write off what the people forming their end users like or want. It's elitism of a narrow kind.
That's speaking as someone who hated to hear them or see them. I can at least appreciate their merit. Plus looking at a few of them after spice girls. They somehow kept in the public eye and remained marketable. Vicki unposh spice went to America, started her own fashion label and became a star in that world too. She had independant success in another field. Without ability she'd have disappeared completely,

Methinks she had the talent / advice to surround herself with talented people, which is a little different
The difference with apple is the package is well thought out and produced. The Dyson stuff has no differentiation from others in the marketplace, certainly not when you consider their more premium pricing.
I disagree - I think KT is right. Apple's protectionist policies are at least as bad as Dyson's. Both are good examples of style over substance conning people into believing there's some magic ingredient. In the case of Apple, the products may work well enough, but unless you also try one of the cheaper alternatives, you end up thinking they do something the others can't. Which many of the conned don't because they buy into the whole hype. It is almost like addiction.
Gambling companies that protested at the government restricting the amount that can be bet on machines in betting shops because their business model relied on the addicts bankrupting their families are acting in a very similar way to tobacco companies and also to these super-brand companies. Because you, in theory, can chose not to buy it, it's somehow OK for them to sell this stuff for way over the odds.
I understand that's just how business works, but not all business is quite as morally bankrupt

I suppose if you can go anywhere on holiday or buy yourself an island or live anywhere on earth you choose and your peer group can do exactly the same, it's the only way to impress the neighbours.

Vicky unposh spice started a fashion label which has actually lost millions and is allegedly kept afloat by the money of some footballer she is in a relationship with.
Why does anyone? Never did understand that myself. Do squillionaires have neighbours? That's the first thing I'd avoid.
A local billionaire is taking steps to buy out all his neighbours apparently. Some might suggest paying his taxes to make the world a better place would be a better policy than just isolating himself from the problems his wealth hoarding has caused but I suspect he won't listen.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.
Changing the subject, the Council workmen have just strimmed (a month too early) the wild flower/grass verge outside our boundary fence I was trying to encourage - including the wild flower plugs I'd only planted last month. I was praising them earlier for leaving it.

I'm mystified to find myself thinking Bill Gates might actually be alright, if only when compared to the rest of them
