I agree - anyone can feel out of place in gatherings for many reasons but that doesn't necessarily mean that others present see things the same way.  If you go somewhere already thinking you may be out of place, that feeling tends to remain with you. It's not a feeling restricted to ethnicity.
I can understand that your skin colour plus the "wrong" suit can double the feeling if surrounded by people of a different hue dressed in the "right" suit - I echo your sentiment that he was a brave lad to even bother to attend.  He obviously towered over them in more ways than height and good for him.

Don't be such a wuss @NorthernJoe.  Get yourself a man bag if you need one!   It could be very smart leather or a more casual canvas/rucksack style and not shorten your manhood.

Way back in the early 80s, long before man bags were commonplace I worked with a guy who used one.  His surname was Darling so you can imagine the stick he took from us back in the pre-PC days.  He took it in good part which was fortunate for us as he was about 6 feet tall, built like the proverbial brick outhouse and had the nose of a failed boxer.

I've got a really nice Barbour waxed canvas manbag that I use for work. I get a lot of stick about it on building sites :|
Grumpy today because my wife just tried to drive away and found the tyre was flat. It's a brand new tyre and there's a screw stuck in it. No doubt another one from the building site next door. Buggers are probably jealous of my manbag.
If you can keep your head, while those around you are losing theirs, you may not have grasped the seriousness of the situation.

I think you'll find that it's only flat at the bottom🤔

I don't own a Handbag so it isn't just a female thing despite all that we are told to the contrary. A rucksack or a shoulder bag proves sufficient for my needs.
Man "bags" in France have been much in evidence since at least the early '80's - if you need to carry stuff around with you, a suitable bag is the ideal.  Sense, rather than fashion should prevail.

At a quite recent funeral the widow insisted we dressed for summer, a joyous occasion with sombre moments, she said, reflecting a life lived to the full. I was in a very smart, candy-striped Gurteen jacket. The rest of the congregation were in navy, charcoal and black.

As for bags, I have a few. Mostly they’re loosely seen as courier bags either in distressed leather or canvas.

Five of us went to my cousin's funeral dressed very soberly and formally in black or navy. Nobody had told us that the dress code was summer party, complete with flower garlands round necks and in hair. There was even dancing down the aisle at the end. We felt and looked like crows. I've never been so discombulated in my life!
I hate modern funerals, death is not a joyous event and shouldn't be treated as though it never happened.

Jeggins here, definitely NO pockets, well "fake" ones. My oldest kids are 6.1daughter has 6,foot long legs. Son has skinny waist as well, her son is 6.6.   Ex hubbies Mother would be well into late 90s if still alive was 6, ft, unusual for a woman of that age

I'll start to look like my uncle. He used them back in the 80s and got stick for it. Nah scrub that if I need a bag it's a proper rucksack but it's not as user friendly as a woman's handbag is for women. There's simply no male equivalent that works. Do not knock male pride! It's a mix of peer pressure, toxic masculinity and is kind of the the opposite of what happens to little girls with the pretty pink Princess crap
