Why do people dislike Dyson so much? He's a self made brilliant entrepeneur (even if his products are overpriced and useless!). He's given millions to our local hospital, funding a Neonatal research unit, Breast Cancer unit and a state of the art Cancer Care Centre which is being built right now. Local people were very upset when Bath Council turned down his plan to build and fund a College of Technology here, it was a great loss to the youngsters of this city and beyond.
I think what people object to with Dyson, Branson etc is that they have moved much of their business (and themselves in some cases) from the UK and still think they should be able to tell those still living here what to do.
My dislike of Dyson is relating to his early business model. He took an established technology that's been around for a very long time in industry then applied it to a domestic application. That's called innovation and is good.
He then stifled competition with fiercely defended patent applications in a very cynical way. I believe anyone with a basic understanding of the patent system would know he could never have got the final patent approved so he kept it as patent applied which is still protected for a certain number of years. The end of that period came and he let the patent drop. By then he'd come up with something else to patent. Eventually that wheeze died and you get many other companies using the same existing technology to compete with Dyson products.
Imho his company stifled fair competition and I dislike that.
BTW the reason I knew it was a bit of a protectionist ploy was because I studied the technology for part of my degree in a mining related degree. I learnt enough to be able to design the cyclones needed to get efficient, effective filtration. I also knew it was a lot older technology than most ppl realised.
Then he came up with ridiculously priced hairdryer gimmicks. And don't get me started on his airblade hand dryers. How hygienic is it to keep putting your hands into a gap where people's wet hands go. I could never use them without touching the sides, bottom or other parts a lot. They were a terrible design and no more hygienic or efficient than more mainstream hand drivers. Methinks his company is made up of snake oil salesmen and women.
If people buy ridiculously priced gimmick items it says more about their mentality than that of the producer of said item. Anybody who produces and sells anything wants to get as much as they can for the product. It's up to the potential purchaser to decide whether or not they think the price is acceptable to them.
It's no different to everything produced by Apple being far more expensive than virtually identical items manufactured by other companies. Some people are obsessed with brand names, others look for the best value and couldn't care less about brands and certainly wouldn't pay over the odds for it.

packaging / marketing over content. Just look at the Spice Girls. None of them can sing ( point me towards a beautiful song if you disagree with me) but they've sold millions of records.
The difference with apple is the package is well thought out and produced. The Dyson stuff has no differentiation from others in the marketplace, certainly not when you consider their more premium pricing.
It's one thing to say ppl are gullible if they fall for the Dyson style of marketing without validity but there's also a degree of honesty or integrity missing from what they do or did. That's not the buyer's fault it's an issue of the brand that means buyer's suffer.
