I can't see why localised lockdowns aren't being considered for the Delta variant areas. I'm sure there are no cases within 100 miles of us. Difficult choices indeed, but that IS the job of government after all and they'll never make everyone happy, no government ever has , and I doubt any ever will.
We have a government that wasn't even prepared to limit travel inward from India until Boris had finished his face to face meetings with their premier, when it was known that the Delta variant was rampaging across the sub-continent and was more transmissable than earlier types ... all the advantages we have of being an island have been negated. Â

Hosta, going by Chris Whitty's charts last night, if you haven't got the Delta variant in your area now, you probably will have by the time I finish typing this (ok vastly exaggerated). The gov's Covid map shows the current upsurge - and that upsurge is largely Delta.
What I don't follow - and I know science works on evidence - is that it was reported way, way back that Covid in India was hitting the lower age groups - I think I recall at the time they were saying the majority of hospitalizations were under 40s (that was back last year - December'ish?) - and this year (April,May) they were talking the new variant in the same vein. OK - so evidence is required, by while you're waiting to gather the evidence don't you work on caution? If India was getting very high numbers of <40s being hit, wouldn't it be safe to assume the same may happen here, or anywhere else for that matter, once that variant arrived. Is that then the drive behind the new July date - the virus hitting lower age groups that we haven't vaccinated yet?
I always thought as well that the issue wasn't local - it's a pandemic as we all know - so to address this, it's not so much about us getting 70% vaccinated (or whatever the figure is that slows the spread) - obviously it helps locally - but the world getting 70% vaccinated. The more virus globally, the more likelihood of more variants (wasn't a Delta branch reported today?) and the more likelihood that one of the variants is worse than the worst variant we have so far. And unless we turn into a total authoritarian state, a new strain in Ulan Bator will hit us - even with Hancock's super-duper track and trace.

I think even halfcock Hancock would have to admit that even though they've spend £38,000,000,000 on the " world beating " track and trace, that it still doesn't work .
Changing the subject totally: can anyone point me towards a recipe for burgers? I've got lots of packs of beef mince in the freezer and I thought I might try making some. Something a bit spicy perhaps? I have the kitchen skills of a housebrick, so nothing too technical please.Â
Don't you just throw stuff in that you like ?- mush up some garlic, onions - a bit of chilli - seasoning - maybe smoked paprika or whatever takes your fancy. Then an egg or two to bind and some breadcrumbs. Have a play with one pack (500g?) and make a few, then adjust your recipe to suit. These from the BBC seem a bit bland to me.. but then I like hot, chilli food...
I'm no cook, but Jamie did a grand Greek style honey & orange semolina 'cake' - oranges blitzed with the semolina, butter and egg (I think) then that in a baking tray and while its cooking you heat up honey with cinnamon (or whatever - maybe Allspice?) and lemon juice - take the cake out, leave to cool a bit on a wire thingy - then put it back in the baking tray - put knife holes all over it and pour over the honey and let it soak in. Just like being on the quay at Skiathos back in the 90s. Bit of Greek yoghurt and hey presto
I modified the Jamie recipe and now add mixed fruit to it as well (after the other ingredients have been blitzed in a blitzer thing) - making me think I haven't made one for ages....
