“Double Delight” it is @Marlorena. Here’s a photo. There’s some wind damage on young leaves as you can probably see, and the flowering bud on the left is being weighed down by all the rain it’s taken on today! I nipped of a bunch of leaves with what I thought was Black Spot last night but above you’ll see one I found just now (and one in the background).
It’s the first year it’s been in that planter, I repotted a couple of months ago- it’s been absolutely flying until now.
A photo from yesterday (not sure what will be left after today... so far some alliums were decapitated). Nelly Moser finally opening. Last year on 2/5, in 2019 on 27/4.
@newbie77 I just knew you wouldn’t last until Monday 😆 Marie Pavie has lovely little fragrant blooms doesn’t it? My new ones haven’t stopped blooming since they started, think it’s going to be a garden stalwart.
@Marlorena, I think I’m quite emotional today, so that must be bringing out the flowery language! I had my first jab at 9am this morning (Moderna) which seems such a momentous step out of this nightmare. OH had the AZ and has to wait 12 weeks for the next, whereas I only have to wait 4, so, to her immense irritation, I will be done and dusted first!
Ooh, that’s a difficult question, Munstead Wood or The Prince. If I was forced to save just one it would probably be TP, even though it’s really fussy about location and doesn’t know if it wants to be a climber or a shrub. I certainly find myself photographing his highness more than any other rose. And, as much as I love MW, the deeply sumptuous, fragrant blooms on TP are really rather rare and precious...
@ciaranmcgrenera If it’s any comfort I have had blackspot for weeks, even on roses usually resistant and my temperatures haven’t yet reached the critical point for it. Bonkers, changeable weather, possibly. I also just pick off the worst leaves and regularly clean up any fallen ones beneath. Leaving plenty of space around the rose and in winter, pruning out any crossing or crowded stems helps with air circulation - crowded conditions encourage fungal infections. Mulching with fresh compost around the base also helps to suppress the spores lurking there. In saying all that, if a rose is going to get it, it will get it regardless, so best not to worry about it too much.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
@ciaranmcgrenera ..that isn't black spot... BS is not terribly active at the moment, it needs temps in excess of mid 60'sF to thrive... we've not had much of that.. what I do see is a minor outbreak of Rose Rust, which is caused by another fungus.. there may also be some negligible fertilizer burn or wind damage to the edge of the leaf, or some other cause on that... ...all I can say is, if that rose was in my garden I would hardly notice, but I accept others will see it differently and worry about their rose in a way that I wouldn't..
For Rose Rust, in severe cases, and that is not severe, normally I would remove the leaf/leaves... I might remove that leaf you are holding with your hand.. I would probably ignore it.. but I have to leave that up to you...
For a rose with strong fragrance, Double Delight has moderate to good disease resistance, but you should still be prepared for foliage issues throughout the season on this rose.. it isn't perfect, few of them are.. I cannot advocate spraying as I don't do it but I think most sprays include rust treatments too. Best of luck with your rose.. is that a Nelly Moser or Dr Ruppel in the background?..
@Nollie ..oh lucky you... I don't know anybody here that's had Moderna.. I get my 2nd jab next week.. I wish I'd had the Pfizer one if I'm honest.. but at least you haven't had to wait as long as you thought... things are looking up we hope..
I thought you'd say The Prince, in your garden it seems deserved of that accolade as it looks exceptionally good from what we see.. but I understand it can be a modest grower too.
Sorry didn't mean to contradict on the black spot issue... please continue with the flowery language.. oh and your Ivor's Rose earlier is surprisingly puny... I know who you got it off, they should do better.. I have seen good specimens of that rose potted in garden centres here, so I'm surprised a bit..
@Marlorena thanks so much- great to talk to someone with such great knowledge!
It’s a Nelly Moser, going great guns this year despite storm damage a few weeks ago. I’ve got about 16 or 17 big dinner plate blooms on the go at the moment, all arriving in the last 10-14 days.
..this 'Scented Garden' bloom has been trying to open for 3 weeks.. ..this French Lavender 'Helmsdale' has come into flower all of a sudden.. I think it's quite a good one of this type.. ..garden looking green at the moment.. clematis 'Guernsey Cream' one of the few in flower.. Brunnera 'Jack Frost' mainstay of this area.. I dread to think what this will look like tomorrow.. ..this isn't meant to highlight a Foxglove, but Geranium macrorrhizum 'Bevans var.' is so useful for shadier spots... the best ground cover.. pinkish/purple flowers..
