Did you get the thunderstorm @Fire last night. Didn't hear a thing myself, but the heavens opened at 6am ( might have had some before then 😴) and now half the garden is on the floor! Did protect some of it, but you can't do it all. This is the moment that my new patio rose Sparkle decides to open 🤦♀️ it is slightly odd as only the outer petals have opened and the centre still looks like a tight bud.
..gosh so many gorgeous roses, I'm looking in here constantly checking everything out.. I'm holding off on those Pheno Geno until I know more, but they look good so far.. interesting roses, if they stay healthy in our climate..
.. @Mr. Vine Eye .. that's how G de F should be, I'm delighted you've got the colours you were wanting.. it does take time and your rose should start to flower all summer with a good flush in August/Sept as well.. maybe not this year so much.. mine took about 3 seasons to get into that rhythm.. Your Rhapsody in Blue is one of the best I've seen.. quite a star in your garden..
@JessicaS .. I can't say if that's Handel or not, as that rose is a vigorous climber and it would have produced a thick climbing cane by now.. Eustace will have to wait and see if it does that.. a smaller rose very similar and suitable for pots, but with stronger edging is 'Hannah Gordon'..
These aren't my flowers, but I was in the garden at St Bene't's Church in Cambridge and saw these — can anyone help with identification? Only if it's obvious; I understand it can be difficult as I didn't take different photos of the whole bush, sepals, receptacles, etc. I think they must be David Austins?
There were no labels and there was no one to ask. The photos are straight from my iPhone, just cropped so they are the right way round. Thanks in advance!
1. Red with a medium-strong old rose perfume scent; a sprawling bush, as seen in the background behind the allium
2. Pink with a light to medium rose scent; a loose upright shrub about 4 feet tall
3. White on a 3-foot bush, light fragrance
4. Another white one, I don't think it's the same as #3, about 3 feet high
And a bonus photo of a ladybird poppy for those who got this far.
@Victoria Sponge, yes it was magical! Just a small place but packed with roses and flowers. Here's a general view. If anyone lives in or near Cambridge, you just have to buy takeaway from Bread & Meat and they will let you in the garden to eat it (no one else allowed inside).

No, the thunderstorms missed London, it seems, and most of the UK. I was tracking them coming up from Nantes on this great real time lightning map. It seems Kent got hit and then it tracked off into the ocean, as usual. We had very little rain too, in London. There are showers around for the rest of the week. The Met has tomorrow down as a thunderstorm and deluge day but it very much depends on the winds. I was disappointed (personally) but I hope we will get some good storms at some point.
No thunderstorms here last night nor today; not even a drizzle. I was hoping that the plants will get watered naturally, but now have to water them today sometime in the evening after work.
@JessicaS@Marlorena Yes, Handel does ring a bell. I had bought a few roses from Parkers ages ago. I have, however, kept them pruned heavily and in pots, all this time.
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
Various roses from the last few days. From the top, Hot Chocolate, Eustacia Vye, Sweet Wonder (a rather flattering photo, it's more bright orange/peach), Winchester Cathedral, Graham Thomas and the old classic, Iceberg.
I was miffed too @Fire I love a good storm. I'm in a village outside of Lincoln now, but was in Lincoln till six years ago. As Lincoln is set in the dip of a ridge most storms went around, so I thought yippee I'm in the path now, no such luck.😡 Have had very few good storms here. Next storm prediction is Sunday.
@cooldoc It’s quite strongly scented, I’m not very good at describing the notes in the scent. It won the Prix du Parfum awarded by the French Rose Society.
