Hello @SeahorseFriend, yes, I think that's the book. I can't check because most of my books are still in cardboard boxes in the loft as the builders haven't yet finished the study. OH has his books in the sitting room. I downsized in January.
Dordogne and Norfolk. Clay in Dordogne, sandy in Norfolk.
@Marlorena thanks, got it. May have to come back in a few months with pictures to check my understanding. I have not pruned it at all so far, as its first year growth was feeble. Cheers.
Hurrah, the rain has stopped and the sun is coming out, so I can get out there and do some actual gardening!
Not that anyone needs a reminder of how far behind our roses are, we can just look out the window, but I was looking back at this time last year to compare:
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
Everyone's roses look very glossy and healthy. Here are some of my least frost chewed. The three worst affected have now put on a bit of new growth so I gave them a sneaky liquid feed yesterday. My species rugosa is surprisingly ragged as well but that is going to have to look after itself.
L-R, the beautiful Poet's Wife and Polyantha Yvonne Rabier which does rather well in a dark spot. Hybrid Musk Stephanie D'Ursel, planted over winter and Ness starting its second year
Top left, another first year Lens HM, Chateau de Munsbach. RHS pic has Flanders front which I had in a pot last year, with The Lark Ascending at rear. Bottom left, another Lens newbie, Caroline's Heart and on right, potted Moss Dresden Doll, my first attempt at a permanent potted rose (year 1!)
I just wanted to ask your advice for a super scented rose that would smell sweet/fruity/tea (not old rose or myrrh).
I know some Austins are supposed to be highly scented but I’ve never seen/smelt one of those. Is Eustacia Vye really strongly scented? Would you smell it from a meter away?
Also, what’s your thoughts about hybrid tea and floribunda roses, such a Fragrant delight or Rachel (Foxtrot)? I love the look of them. Any of you grow them?
..lovely collages... I do that Nollie, compare dates... I'm about 3 or even 4 weeks behind.. April effectively put the kibosh on most things..
..nice foliage on your roses @Victoria Sponge and we look forward to the blooms on those, some are not well known here.. always a plus in my book..
@Oliya ..few roses waft like that, you have to stick your nose in usually... you won't get much wafting from a single bush of Eustacia Vye, although I love the scent on this rose, but there may be some myrrh in it, I'm not sure.. ..for something fruitier as mentioned before you should consider Jude the Obscure.. but there are so many different scents in roses and it's a personal thing..
...a garden full of old fashioned roses from the 19th C will contain many with an apple fragrance, and this will waft around.. pervading the air... not many of us have gardens like that.. .. I would expect 'Rachel' to blackspot and possibly defoliate after the first flush, so you would need to watch out for that..
Rain rain rain!! 🌧️ Glorious rain!! I didn't believe it would actually come today so I gave all of my pots a soak.
So pleased to see the new waterbutts starting to fill up. I got all excited when I heard the trickling sound. 😄 Just realised that this is the first time I've seen the patio moist since I made it!
Nice trip to Sewerby this morning. Lots of growth in their rose garden. Although to be honest I'm not a huge fan of the rose garden part, it's very traditional rose garden with beds full of the same variety and no complimentary planting other than box hedging. Although it's probably better now and in early summer. There are some interesting things around the outside edges and the roses look good with fresh growth.
Later on it's all bare sticks in the ground. As they all defoliate heavily with blackspot.
Tulips from the main part of the walled garden and some bluebells from the woodland walk.
Thanks @Nollie and @Victoria Sponge, so just before rain got too heavy I started pulling out all the hardy geranium around the rose. Who told me plant geranium as ground cover? Not a good idea, those rhizomes and roots weren’t easy to pull up lol. But going to try and renovate the beds and borders and eventually mulch properly.

That Etoile is a wonderful colour @Fire
