..yeah, it's a British / Dutch design concept I think, stop us from wasting water.. several neighbours have Astroturf, well I don't want that.. but same time, I didn't want a Piet Oudolf inspired border either.. just lots of colourful flowers really..
@SeahorseFriend .. do you have a space in the ground for The A M? it'll be so much better, it's not a rose to keep in that pot for too long really.. Cornelia is an early bloomer, so watch out for that.
Yes, I have a large, clayey border with acres of space for both of them - just waiting until June to make sure they have good roots. I'm very excited for Cornelia, but do you think it needs to go in the ground before the buds open?
@didyw ...you have an interesting selection of roses beautifully put together... I've had my eye on 'Grace' for some time, so I shall look forward to seeing blooms on that one from you.... presumably it's new this year for you?..
Thank you @Marlorena - a long time in the planning with even a last minute change of mind after I had placed my order. Luckily DA were kind enough to make the switch as they weren't sent out until last November I think. Yes - all new this year and they've gone into beds that were very well prepared. Don't worry - I'll be posting pics of them in bloom and keep you updated on Grace. The Banksaie was planted some years ago as I had it at my last house and loved it there. And I have what we established on here as Dorothy Perkins that came with the house. I have one on each side of the garden and pruned them both back down to the ground practically last autumn. Both growing away strongly now - dammit!
@didyw I like the underplanting. Whats that lovely pinky Geum with lady of Shallot?
@Marlorena Your border is very inspiring, I love your huge foxgloves in some of the pictures - Ive actually not tried those before, do they take a few years to get going? Ive brought Zephrine this year and its growing up against my arbour, it looks amazing with the foxgloves.
Having said I hadnt spotted much on the Harkness website, I really do like the look of that "95th Celebration Rose" (even with the awful name!) - lovely two tone and frilled petals anyone grown it?
Well you’ve certainly made a success of the concept @Marlorena.
Yes I have Ivor’s Rose, new this year, but it was one of my runty, sickly specimens with two splayed canes in a line, from you know who! It’s slowly putting on a little growth and even got a bud, but has a long way to go before it reaches it’s full potential of 2 x 3.5 metres. In a vast sea of bare soil at the moment:
Golden Celebration holding it’s blooms up better and looking the best it ever has for me, with Lady Em buds in front. I have come to the conclusion that some Austins need at least 4 years to come good here. I’ll see how it goes, may have been serendipity that it’s planned replacement was out of stock:
The buds on Pure Poetry are huge - bigger than the Rose de Rescht fully open blooms below. This was a flopper last year but looks a bit sturdier now:
My romance with The Prince continues, even though I have to serenade him from below, or clamber on a chair to photograph!
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.

The rugosas are growing but looking very weedy. Definitely not fast growing plants from seed. I’ve got clematis The President starting to open up now.
Always looking forward to the weekends when I can get back in the garden properly again.
No, it's ok, you can leave it in the pot until you're ready... it will still flower for you..
