    @Athelas
    ..thank you..   those buds are beautiful, love the leafy sepals on that rose.. you take a great close up with your camera..

    .. I couldn't be sure what that is, but blistering and curling such as you have there, one normally sees with powdery mildew, but that isn't showing at the moment..  could also be some insect infestation of course but I'm no expert on this sort of thing so anybody's guess..
    I'd just cut them off.. new leaves will soon grow again..  Maybe someone else knows..?.

    @edhelka

    ..your GJ is looking really good this year.. I couldn't help but notice the brown netting around the drainpipe... I did that once using the same thing for a clematis in a half barrel, it covered most of it.. I sometimes think that black down pipes are less intrusive, from a garden point of view..

    @Marlorena Thanks, yes, she's doing well. Still not as a beast as Nollie's GJ but one more year and one or two more nice new canes and most of the obelisk will be covered.
    There's clematis Kokonoe next to it, in a pot. To grow on the netting and mix with GJ.

    Thank you @Marlorena!

    @celcius_kkw, I only got it last month (potted) so I don’t know. I thought I read somewhere that the petals don’t last long in the wind — 20+ mph is generally what a windy day is in my garden so we’ll see. Hope the ladybugs work out well, looking forward to updates.

    On the topic of Gertrude, DA site mentions it as 3.5 x 3ft. Smaller than most others plus good for flowering. My understanding is that it does not have any of this mentioned traits. I am not expecting it remain small, but to say that it is smaller than most others which remains small (for a longer period comparatively) is something. Flowering, a good first flush with scattered later blooms isn't it?

    @newbie77 I’m not sure either, but is that a little mildew on the top of the top right leaf in the photo? Can’t tell if it’s that or light reflection. Unusually cold wet, weather followed by sun has induced some leaf blistering and mildew here, which I don’t normally suffer from. All on the new roses, the old ones weren’t affected. As M says, could be insect damage - aphids or other sap-sucking insects lurking under the leaves?

    @Edhelka, I didn’t know you had Kokonoe, I got one last year but it just withered and died in the heat, probably better suited to your garden! Looking forward to seeing it in bloom, it’s going to look lovely with GJ.

    @Cooldoc I for one would find it impossible to keep GJ to that small size DA states, even with hard pruning, mine gets to 6x4ft easily in a season and that’s constrained in a pot!

    Thanks Nollie and Marlorena. I have communicated your replies to my friend.

    I am a bit bored of going out and checking roses. Everything seems to be halted in this weather. I have decided , I am not going to check until next Monday, so atleast i see some progress!

    I can enjoy blooms on screen from Nollie's garden  :)
