Cheers, you will all overtake me soon, I’m sure. I’m waiting!
I am still waiting in anticipation for first blooms of newbies Ebb Tide, Purple Lodge, Ivor’s Rose, Eufemia, Guy Savoy, Mme. Antoine Mari, Mme. Isaac Periere, Graham Thomas, Mme. Alfred Carriere, Deep Secret, Alexander, Super Trouper and Duchesse d’Auerstadt.
Oh and Arthur de Sansal - I knew that had a bad rep for mildew, but thought it might be ok here. Ha, it’s a top-to-toe furry white mildewed nightmare and in quarantine. It might never make it out of it.
Mountainous Northern Catalunya, Spain. Hot summers, cold winters.
..lots of roses still to come from you @Nollie ... some I'm really looking forward to as I don't know them at all.. but it's a slow burner here this Spring for sure..
.. @Fire it would appear they've had a change of mind and continue to offer this rose from the Autumn.. I suspect the lockdowns etc caused them to have a rethink as they do not have new roses ready to replace them... that's my take on it..
... @newbie77 thanks... I'll show another as season goes on.. it's ambitious to get a border flowering from April to October..
@Omori ..thanks.. by the way I loved your Katherine Havemeyer lilac.. I had one in another garden... I think now I'd probably try Charles Joly too, as I like the richer colour.. but these are not for my garden currently...
@Nollie What I’ve noticed in the last few years is that the first bloom can sometimes look atypical - last year my yellow Sunsprite’s first bloom had a strong orange tinge on the edges but the subsequent flowers reverted back to pure yellow.
The first bloom looked like this
and this is what they’re supposed to look like..
My Munstead Wood has taken three years to really start to pick up its pace this year.. I was close to giving up on it last year. I do feel rather jealous when people online post their MW looking giant and covered in blooms in their first year - but my personal experience is more in line with yours - that it takes a while for it to get going..
I currently have three roses competing for first bloom
Left to right: Sunsprite, Etoile de Hollande, Lady of Shallot
I’ve got to confess I’ve already tried to sniff that fat bud on Etoile.. but there’s no scent just yet 😝
I spotted first buds today on Bathsheba, The Generous Gardener and Munstead Wood. All starting to get going now. I think Desdemona looks close to flowering, she might be first, or Royal Jubilee.
There’s Bathsheba
Wish I’d taken this after I’d edged the lawn! The geraniums at the front are covered in buds now. Roses visible are Scarborough Fair on the left, then Munstead, Royal Jubilee against the shed, The Ancient Mariner and The Generous Gardener on the fence. PAOK is there but barely visible as she’s got so little growth. I like the blue from the Brunnera in the shade and lots of aquilegia popping up on the right.
Saxifrage Highlander red now planted, very pretty.
Chives everywhere! I blame you completely @Marlorena 😉 They look good in bud though.
..^delightful little things aren't they?.. I'm so glad you got some.. mine just started flowering today..
I grew them all from seed not last year, but the year before. I thought the seeds hadn't germinated, but then I found small clumps of them in the garden, so lifted, divided into individual bits and potted. They grew quite quickly then. Now I've popped them all over.
This has to be my favourite place at the moment. I sat for a very long time this afternoon, in-between mowing the paths on the plot, and looked into the pond. I've got snails now!
It's positively teeming with life.Huge shoals of water fleas or whatever they are. Beetles diving in amongst them and catching. Water boatman grazing on the algae. Have a look, it's only a minute long.
..fascinating Mr VE... I always enjoy your videos, perhaps you might make them a bit longer? say 2 minutes? I don't have a pond so I must enjoy the work of others and we've been following your progress..
@celcius_kkw ..not long now Andrew, you will soon have lots of blooms... not betting on which will be first though..
I have a few potted roses. I have fed them FBB around beginning of April, also scraped and replaced top 2" inches of soil. Buds are appearing on most of them. Do they need another feed now? I usually do only the spring feed. I thought this year, during lockdown wfh, I should take better care of my roses. 🙂
Oxford. The City of Dreaming Spires.
And then my heart with pleasure fills,
And dances with the daffodils (roses). Taking a bit of liberty with Wordsworth
@Nollie oh gosh that munstead is gorgeous, I really want one now! @Marlorena beautiful border! Very inspiring.
Heres a few of the spring blooms whilst I wait for the roses. Secret garden club order I punted on to see if there was any improvement, after the last order was a bit naff. Mostly the cheapy sale ones (£1.99 etc) Mostly alpines etc for the stepping stones. Very tiny plants but as they were a bit cheaper not so bad. 3/22 were out of stock which is annoying and they were all very shaken about in transit, but all alive and at least healthy.
Tulips galore - I can check tags if anyone wants to know which varieties are.
Choisya Aztec pearl and Viburnum opulus roseum both in flower - I adore both, choisya smells beautiful, almost like almonds.
Tulip Flaming flag starting to blush - these are lovely, colour slowly bleeds to pink. Tulip dream touch Nachtwacht tulip
@JessicaS, I love your garden and the tulips are smashing—taking notes!
Currently I have reached the Welsh poppies, Brunnera and Allium buds stage in my garden—foliage out everywhere and the early geraniums coming in. My only rose yet in flower is ‘Morletii’ which opened yesterday. It’s strangely ignored but it has so many virtues: begins flowering usually in late April, totally disease resistant, and although it only flowers once, I really grow it (and originally picked it) for the quite breathtaking autumn colour, as its leaves turn brilliant red.
